Warning!!!!!! Ordering Certificates UPDATED!!

I would like to warn anyone ordering Certificates on line from GRO. Please keep an eye on your Bank Statements or Credit Card bills. I have just been charged twice for one certificate. Make sure you print out your order and the other parts they tell you to keep for your records. (luckily I have). Just to let everyone know, I emailed ONS as you are told in the transaction email you are sent, with no response. I phoned GRO who told me they have had a lot of calls with the same problem!!! They gave me a phone number for World Pay which is: 08703661233 and pick option 2 then option 1. You will need the transaction ID that you are given when you order your certificate. UPDATED: I recieved my refund today Friday 10 March.

GRO take payment using the WorldPay system which always e-mails you details about money they take out of your account. nell

yes I know they sent one email but took £7 on the 2/3/2006 and £7 on 3/3/2006

What I mean is, the email is evidence of how much money you have paid. So if they take the money twice you can show you should only have paid once. nell

I have just noticed one payment for the 3rd March and one for the 7th March going out of my bank . The last certificate i ordered was on the 20th Feb. which i am still waiting for. Kate

oh ok yes i know but I was trying to warn people to keep there emails and print out all order information in case it happens to them

Hi i have just phoned the record office and they are aware of the problem, they passed me on to World Pay who are also aware of it. I got a very nice man who said that in a few days i should receive a e mail and a refund for the £14, they just need to sort out first who is to blame, their company or the bank. Kate

I just ordered four certificates today, hope they've sorted it out. there seems to be a bit of a delay at the GRO getting records out recently, don't know what's going on.

Thanks for the tip. I just checked my credit card statement online and found that I too have been charged double for a cerificate ordered on 27/2/2006. I have emailed ONS to alert them to this. Very worrying, isn't it.

So what you are saying is - you get only one confirmation of payment but they then take out two lots of money for the cert? Blimey, Ive ordered so many this month (blame the old free bmd index guys!) that I shall have to be really careful and check it.

I really hope they get themselves sorted out. I've managed to find the birth cert. of my g g grandma born in India, thanks to people on the tips board and can't wait to fiund out what info there is on her... impatient!!!!! :-[

Hi I agree! have also had this prob and also payments made and no certificates received and ongoing dialogue. It is hard work trying to prove you havent had the certificates ordered! Also i have made a payment for a record with correct names and dates and locations i was sure existed only to be advised from GRO that no certificate existed and they charged me the admin charge for looking. After thinking i was going nuts it was a kind person on Genes who confirmed the existence of the record and i have now managed to get the certificate although i am still waiting for the £4 admin charge to be refunded! Up to date accounts records required if dealing with GRO often

I have been charged £14 on 28/2/06 and then £14 again on 1/3/06. My order was placed on the 27th Feb and dispatch date advised as 13th March. These were my first 2 certificates ordered online and worried to death incase I don't receive them let alone the added shock this morning when the card statement told me they had charged a total of £28! I have emailed the reply section to that WorldPay ([email protected]) no reply as yet but will try that phone number thanks Christine

not quite the same thing, i paid £1600 for a freinds holiday online with my card and he gave me the cash there and then, when i phoned for a balance a couple of days later, they had taken the £1600 twice so phoned my card co and they said yes its on our screen, but if its an error it may 'drop off ' the screen in a few days time, and it did and by the time i got my statement it was not on and if i had not phoned for a balance i would never have known, i would not panic about it these are mistakes that will get put right, these are proper companies not crooks out to rob you I have ordered between 10 & 20 certs a month for 3 years and have never been charged twice.
