I have been struggling to find the Gillards and Lewis' in Tiverton that I am related too. I received a marriage certificate today, finally, and it's not helped too much at all. October 4th 1883 George Lewis m. Lucy Maria Gillard Ages: Very helpful registrar writes 'Of full age'. Thanks for that Arthur Rawlings. Married in Tiverton Fathers: George Lewis (Laborour) and Robert Gillard (Fisherman, I think) Witnesses: Henry Gillard and Ellen Hill Anyone care to check to see where I'm going wrong? Thanks Jeanette. Can you explain to me how you found them because I've spent the morning going through ancestry and havn't found them at all. What did you enter into the search etc as I've tried all the names, lucy, robert and henry gillard. I've even tried looking for the Lewis relations and haven't found any of those too. Also, do you not think that Lucy being born in 1844 makes her quite old to be married in 1883. Could there been a marriage before this or is she truly the spinster the marriage cert. says she is?

I have a couple of older female marriages (1st marriages mind,not remarriages).One was 37 and one was 42,as for the chaps,the oldest one was 72 at the time of his 3rd wedding,his first wedding occurred at the age of 58!! Glen

Even when I discarded the estimated DoB when doing the searches I had no luck finding either the Gillards or Lewis' It annoys me sometimes that I'm having to put you folks out because I just can't find who I'm looking for each time I get a certificate in the post. :(

Hi Ian I can't remember whether I entered Lucy Gillard + Tiverton or Lucy + Tiverton. I know she didn't take much finding.......whcih is more than can be said for your Lewis's! LOL I suppose she does seem a bit old by todays standards, but it didn't seem that unusual in those days to get married at that age. But as we know only too well, they could also twist the truth a fair bit! Just going back for another look to see what I can find! Jeanette x

I may have dismissed those that were too early into the 1800's then. I just know I was struggling to find a family that had a few of the names in one address. Thanks for the help.

I've just noticed that there is a John and Susan Lewis living with the Burgess family next door. Unless its a transcript error do you think these are the same family?.

I noticed that too Ian. Pitty Susan's hubby isn't with her, but I suppose you could look to see if there is a marriage of a Susan Burgess to somebody with the surname Lewis. Now the real problem is trying to find out if that is your George!

Ok I think we can forget that George from Combmartin. In 1881 he is married to Mary E with 4 children!

Right, I need to apologise here. I've just re-read my notes and realised that some searching has already done on this. I also remember the deal. I was told Lucy was married previous and had children but then we discovered she hadn't married but had had children out of wedlock.
