this has probably been asked lots of times but on a marriage cert does it give the date of birth or just age at that time of marriage thanks Rosex

Hi Rosie, Just the age ,or the term 'full' meaning 21 years or more, but there are many times that the ages will be inaccurate. A groom often wanted to appear older than the bride, and young un's might claim to be 'full age' when they weren't. Glen

Age at the time You're not married, I take it...........lol Reg

Irene Report 26 Apr 2006 11:25

No date of birth but just the age at the time of the marriage. That is not always true either. Sometimes it just states of age which should mean over 21. Good luck with your research. Irene

Rosie it can either give the age or, if you are dead unlucky - 'of full age' - meaning over 21. It seems that older people are more likely to have that and younger people, their ages. But that is just a generality. Victoria

In England it just give the age if you're lucky. Quite often it says 'of full age' meaning over 21 or 'minor' meaning below 21. Heather

To find the DOB you need to trawl the GRO index for the birth, then purchase the cert. Assuming, of course, that it is within a time-span covered by the records...........you haven't mentioned a year. Reg

Are we talking pre 1901 births, maybe then with an idea of where born it could be possible to search the census, and then look for possible births in the index. Glen

It depends on the period. When someone dies, the death certificate shows age at death (which may be wrong!) If you can find the couple on the census, that will show ages (which may be wrong!) You look to find as many pieces of information as you can, to give you an idea of the most likely date of birth. There is, however, nothing to prevent someone lying six times and accidentally letting the truth slip on the 7th. Good luck.

Just thought, the very recent death cerificates show dob and place of birth....... but these too can be wrong.

Glen In Tinsel Knickers Report 26 Apr 2006 11:39

If you post her name (maiden name please) and any clue as to where she was born,i will have a look at the 1901 for you. It might narrow it down a little bit for you. Please don't say she was Mary Smith....... Glen

Phoenix Report 26 Apr 2006 11:42

If your mum knows when and where her mum died, and her mum's name, and the only thing wrong in the index is the age, then get the certificate. The age may have been provided by someone who didn't know your gran's age, or it may have been entered wrongly in the index.

Rosie If Kath sent you the image there seems little point in me looking for it and repeating what info you have already, two wrongs don't make a right.LOL See what the certificate brings to light and shout if you need any help. Glen
