I know the name of my great Grandad. But i'm having problems confirming my Great Grandad on the Cencus. My Dad isn't convinced i have the right family. I know who he married. Will this help find him to confirm anything? If so wheres the best place to look... I think I'm going mad with all this.

Right, you are working backwards from your dad - so you def. know who your grandparents were, yes? Do you have their marriage certificate? That would give their dads names and occupations (your GGF). You could then tie that in with the census info It would also give an area where they married which may help and also witness signatures which could be further clues. Why dont you give us what info you have and what you want to confirm?

Tell us who, when and where he married and his name! Do you have the marriage certificate (and does your dad agree it's the right one?!). If you do, then what are the full details from the cert? Merry

I feel so guilty asking other people to look because i know how time consuming it can be. All I know is My Great Grandad was calle Ernest Sanderson married a Annie Arnold. We pressume this was in Whitby North Yorkshire. My Grandad was born in 1914 his mother Annie around 1891 his Dad Ernest still unsure. We found a family on the 1901 cencus he was said to be 15. But like i said my Dad isn't convinced i have the right family for Ernest

Based on year of marriage...this one in 1901 is a possibility, but you really need the marriage cert, as advised above, to confirm his father's name. Reg. Thats the one we have and aren't sure of. If it is correct any ideas as to why the eldest daughter was born elsewhere???? My dad seems to think the family came from Durham thats why we weren't convinced the parents were born in Whitby. Tracy

Well, I still say wait till the marriage certificate comes before doing any more research on the family, but sometimes birthplaces are wrong on the census, for instance earlier on today I was looking at somebody's ancestor who was born Ireland on several censuses but then suddenly changed to being born in the Derbyshire village where he was living at the time of the census! I think thats my Dads line of though Kate Because they lived in Whitby then they just put that down. And as the eldest was born else where it's thrown us a bit.

So from earlier cencus could i find out if Nathaniels place of birth had changed???

The marriage cert is the only way to proceed.......with all due respect to your dad, he is probably relying on info passed down verbally through the generations....and that can get distorted with the passage of time............ Reg
