Hi Valerie, I've added a message to the board today giving a tip for uploading a gedcom and removing living relations, so if the person is reading this please do read the post on a tip for uploading gedcoms, as they might be trying to delete any living relations and unconnected individuals as well. I completely agree that you should ask living relations before uploading their details here, and would advise anyone struggling to remove any unconnected or living individuals to follow that tip I posted, and that should do the trick. Best wishes

I try to limit my Tree to actual blood relatives, their spouses and their spouses parents and siblings. I freely confess that, if a member allows me to view their Tree and there are blood relations to me on it that I will copy the info and add it to my Tree. After all, this is surely why we share our information. I have however found that occasionally someone sends me a Gedcom file which may have lots of blood relations on it that there may also be any number of in-laws. It is far easier to upload the Gedcom file and make the link than to manually enter each individual. And it is too time-consuming to find and delete all the in-laws.

This happened to me thro GR and I was horrified to find me and my mum on his tree (both still living the last time I looked) - it has taken me 2 years to get as far as I have and he just whacked it on! I asked him to delete those living and thankfully he did. Good luck, I hope the person concerned removes your details.

I never send a gedcom, mainly because I don't know how to do it but with my experience of others I am not sure that I want to learn! I message them my email addy and when they reply send a print out of the part of the tree that they are interested in. And I still get caught with family members appearing on the net! On each occasion it has not been the person I sent the info to, but they have obviously passed it on to 'name collectors'. I am not sure how you stop that. Give the person a chance to remove your information themselves, then contact genes and they will remove it for them! Christine in NZ

thats terrible Christine I agree I love to share normally it can sometimes help as the more on the site the more likely someone will match . This man has about 8000 I believe I wonder how many he has actually researched ??? I will give him a few days owing to the holiday weekend he oculd be away, and then if nothing will contact GR.

I have always been very generous in sharing information figuring that I would not have got so far if others were not very generous with me. However yesterday while searching another site I found my entire family, with details that show it could only have come from me. Trouble is, I know that I have never had contact with the poster who has over 100,000 people on his tree! There was a comment on the information that it was well researched! I know my bit was and I know that there is no way this person could research that many people himself, well or otherwise! I will be very careful in future just who I share information with and how much of it I share. Trouble is when you make a contact it is so exciting that you just want to share it all! Like you I have had problems with living relatives being put on this site by a person who obtained the information from someone else who obtained it from me. After frequent messages asking him to remove them without a reply, I contacted genes who removed them for me. Christine in NZ

I do find it hard to understand why anybody would wish to populate their tree with strangers. Mine is approaching 1,800 but every one is either a blood relation or married to one. Every name on my tree will hopefully attract somebody who shares my bloodline. Not so with this person. I find this thought rather sinister. What would they do with such information?

yes I know that Alter, but I had not realised it was all my names, anyway its surely only common courtesy to ask if its okay to use all, I certainly would, but then I have manners.

Kate

Kate Report 29 Apr 2006 16:47

Hmmm, I think if he actually deletes them using the GR tree system he would have to delete each person separately, so he is more likely to delete them using his family tree program on his computer then upload a new GEDCOM file. In which case he could delete just the living if he wants to and everybody else would stay on. Kate.

you gave him the names ffs,its not as if hes raided them off you,no matter how it happened.

Heather

Heather Report 29 Apr 2006 16:44

It happens, it's happened to me! Some people just seem to want to add the whole lot, even the far distant in- law lines. It must be something about seeing all the links including those not in their family. I think if you can get them to remove the living ones the others on your husbands side should disappear. Heather

thanks Christine and Linda, its no wonder he has a huge Tree I wonder how many are actual rellies. I dont mind any of my contacts using my names except for living ones I always say they can and I always ask if its okay to use theirs, after all thats how to get hopefully new contacts, but when you keep seeing all your names it gets very galling.
