Hi Babs Charting Companion - I am using laptop at moment, so can check it. It came ona seperate disc, but was inside one of the FTM disc cases, I received 3 cases. Open up Charting Companion, if you go to file open, you can either browse to find a FTM programme or it can scan and find them for you. You choose a relative then decide which kind of tree you want, you can choose colours to use, fonts etc. I havent used it yet as I cant print from here. To be honest I think FTM 2006 has more options as you can choose borders etc. FTM - images, as long as you have saved them to your ocmputer you can add the. I save all the bmd pages and add them as you can't add the image directly from the merge. As a tip I save the image as e.g An Other Birth reg Q3 1877 Ipswich 1a 56, then I have the ref quickley to hand if I need to order a cert.

Maureen thanks for that , I had done that before and it must have been a birth one as there was nothing inside, but just checked on another for a census and hey it was there;; Very good that so you are saying you can add a image that you already have onto that page as well;; Perrenmaid, dont know how to do a excel sheet never mind make a fancy one;;

Perranmaid Report 11 May 2006 23:13

I felt the same until I started to use it. I don't use all the fancy formulas and all that math stuff except to add up a column of simple numbers. Maths is my pet hate by the way. I must admit it took a while to enter the info first time round but now I can just slot things in as and when I feel the need. Anyway time for bed me thinks I am definitely losing the plot today Night all.

Babs, when you merge and add an image, you can find it by going to the person in question, at the end of their name will be like a scroll and it will have a black corner. When you click on this you get a box come up saying citation, then further down it in that box it has images, you click on this and hey presto. You can also add them this way.

Hehe Heather you are either as daft as me or as thick;;; LOL I read the last reply and no nothing about excel except it is suppose to be good, maybe I should get my nose in some of these books they have got me on computers and things;;;hehe

Heather Report 11 May 2006 22:51

It does make sense but I dont think Im up to it! Many thanks for explaining though - perhaps one day I shall get that organised.

Heather I have found the best way to do that is in excel. I know it initially means a lot of typing (arrgh) but worth it in the end I have found. What I have done is create a complete colour coded list of any baptisms, marriages, deaths burials I come across which you can then sort by name date etc. I have several colums fathers name spouse name mothers name and more. For the census I have done a similar thing but given each family a number as I have entered them, as a child marries and is tracked through the census they are allocated the next number available but I indicate in the original family the new number, and also alongside the new number the original family number. Last bit sounds complicated but isn,t in reality. I have tried to do this in FTM but you cannot get the sort capability to enable you to double check the info. or fit in the strays. If that lot doesn,t make sense let me know!!! Am struggling tonight to think logically, had one of those days.

Heather Report 11 May 2006 18:17

Babs, you have to save the census image and then put in on FT as a scrap book additon. The help tab at the top tells you lots of stuff, but you have to know what you want to know first! Fred, cant add a fictitious person as that would confuse me even more. What I want to save is things like - the whole parish records for births in St Marys Rotherhithe - which may have a couple of dozens of connections but may not. And someone very kindly sent me some early 19th century church school info with pupils who may be mine, but may not be. So I just wanted to keep a sort of list of things that I could refer to later on if a connection suddenly rears its beautiful head.

Oh well, for once I am ahead! (I think?!) The family history program I use has a notes facility where you can view all the outstanding things in one place AND each individuals census, photos, BMD certs and anything else you care to add as a picture is all available with one click when viewing the person concerned! How about adding an unrelated person or persons, and ading the info to them. Then if you find a connection you have the details to hand. Or even create a new tree with all the info in. Fred

KathleenBell Report 11 May 2006 14:12

Heather - you sound like me. I've never looked at any instructions or anything. I think I'll have to play about with FTM and maybe I can get rid of all the tiny pieces of scrap paper with rubbishy notes that are laid all over the house if I find this 'Research Journal' thing. Kath. x

Heather

Heather Report 11 May 2006 14:05

Yes Fred, I do that too - but it is the 'bits' of possibly connected, possibly not info that I wanted to be somewhere so IF I ever found a connection they would be there safe and sound to be integrated.

Fred (“\(*-*)/”) Report 10 May 2006 22:54

IW I use the individual and marriage scrapbooks in FTM to hold the BMD, census and photos . Fred

Heather

Heather Report 10 May 2006 22:18

Woo hoo, what is the research journal and which button do I press? Found it! I really must read the instructions one day. Anyone else wanting to know - you click on view and then go down that list to Research Journal. Not perfect - I would have liked it to have alphabetical listings BUT I guess I could do this myself - and then add the notes about people under it - woo hoo. Many thanks.

Perranmaid

Perranmaid Report 10 May 2006 21:54

Heather I use the research journal for that type of thing. It creates a list and you can then tick when done. Hope that helps.

Heather

Heather Report 10 May 2006 20:44

Yes, that would be a good addition aswell. And oh how I wish the merge facility would actually add the census details to the notes of the individual!

Heather

Heather Report 10 May 2006 18:18
