Hi Linda. Unless Helen is a night owl like me, she might not be around the boards for a bit, as it's just past midnight here. :)

Hiya, That's what i got for Winifred and caroline too yay! Glad to see i'm working along the lines of someone who knows what they're doing. annie would have been born in sussex somewhere. but i couldn't find any for east preston like the others. These are the notes i've amassed on annie from talking to my gran (Norah on the list up there) born 10th Jan 1890 ish died december before 90th birthday 1981/2 ish. Only close record found was for 1893 this would work with the theory that she died at 89 in 1982. Nana was a domestic servant in a big house in Hove and Grandad was a cavalry type on a horse stationed in Portslade at the old recreation ground. He used to go and see her on his horse and talk to her over the back wall!! Naughty, naughty Going back a bit G'ma recalls a story of Nana's greatddad or maybe great grandad (so that's the Richards line) committing suicide by throwing himself under a train at Fishersgate. No idea of the girls parents names unfortunatly. The first relative that emmigrated to the states was... er... me! lol

Hi Linda. :) I'm sitting here, quietly laughing -- and yes, I'm quietly typing!! :) I was just doing my nightly googling -- Helen's got me thinking of Sussex, so I'm trying ONCE AGAIN to break one of those brick walls. :) I do have to go to sleep soon though, as we're busy at work and I don't want to have to crawl in to the office tomorrow morning. Night Linda and Helen. :) PS Linda, I'll write soon.

Thanks so much for helping. I guess i should go hit the sack it's almost 1 am. Of course the advantage of being self employed is i can sleep in lol. I'll check back in in 8 hours or so. Goodnight to LJ too. And don't forget. Anyone needs a look up of anything in my area let me know :)

Hi Helen & Lisa J: This is what I have for Dorothy Emily Howard: She was born in England, May 20, 1894. Don't know exactly where - probably Durham county or Northumberland. S.S. #565-42-9835 Issued in Calif. It shows Birth-May 20, 1894 Death - March, 1971 Residence code: Calif Zip 94901 San Rafael, Calif. I am trying to find the connection to my Grandmother who was a Harrison (maiden name- Allan) We think she was a cousin but not sure. We know she is a relative of some sort. I have her on the 1930 U.S. Census in Michigan then she moved to Calif. we think in the 1950's. She did work at San Quenton Prison as a kind of Nanny for one of the Guards. I am trying to find out who her parents are and where exactly she was born. I did send for a birth cert. but now not sure I hve the right one. I would have sent you both a P.M. but didn't want to repeat all of this twice. Anyway thanks for anything you can find out for me. Regards Shiela

Ladies: Thanks for your help. Would I be able to look up a Death Notice in a newspaper online? I don't even know if it was put in the paper as she had no husband or children or relatives in Calif.? If so can you give me the names of the newspaper for San Rafael area? thanks again, Shiela

Philip

Philip Report 14 Jun 2006 18:47

You may be in luck there, my uncle in law works for the Marin county independant journal the main newspaper of the area. :) I'll look up anything i can.

Philip

Philip Report 14 Jun 2006 18:51

the website is www(.)MarinIJ(.)com It doesn't look like they've got archives online, but i'll bet they have them at the paper building or library. I'll see what I can do.

Hi Shiela. I've only just seen this, sorry. I've just looked around again, and can't find any yet, but I've sent you a pm. Perhaps someone else might have some ideas to help, eh?

Philip

Philip Report 11 Aug 2006 01:00

Hi Sheila, I tried the newspaper angle and unfortunately there aren't archives back that far. I didn't manage to get down there in person yet because business has been kinda hectic but i'm looking at a slower week this coming week so I'll try and get down there. Lisa, where are you again? perhaps we could meet up and do some looking together :) Helen

Hi Helen and Lisa Lisa I know that you helped me with some of this a few weeks ago but I have lost the information that you gave me. I cant believe it. The only thing I do still have is the census that you sent me.I cant remember were I was up to. I need to start again. David Condon is on the 1880 US Census as being in Redwood City Jail, San Mataeo. He was 23 years old and married. He was born in England and both his parents were born in Ireland. How can I go about finding any information on him, for example who he married, what he was in jail for. Any ideas would be appreciated Thankyou, Jayne
