I've got Sharwood and Sherwood, which at one point became Shearwood before finally settling down as the former in the early 20thC. I've learnt to look for all spelling variations, including some of the more creative versions! I also have Mathews which is sometimes spelt with two 't's and Philipson which sometimes appears with two 'l's. I am hence very flexible with spellings, as indeed should everybody be! I have an Adams who sometimes dropped the 's' from his name, and a Sharp who sometimes added an 'e'. It's a wonder I have got anywhere with my family tree at all!!

A million thanks to you all for for replies and help. Sorry for long delay in replying - I currently have family over visiting from UK so haven't had much time to come on the PC. There are a few things in the replies that look good and worth following up - in particular Merry - her father WAS Johnathan Fielding so that could even be her father. Thank you all so much. I'd be lost without you.

Just something to think about from TNA: Item details: WO 97/1227/158 : quick reference JONATHAN FIELDING Born BLACKBURN, Lancashire Served in Royal Artillery Discharged aged 40 1825-1846 Merry

If the death cert of Rachel Fielding has ''widow of X Fielding'' Name: Rachel Fielding Birth Date: abt 1802 Year of Registration: 1870 Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep Age at death: 68 District: Blackburn County: Lancashire Volume: 8e Page: 223 and the marriage of Catherine Fielden has the same X Fielding/en as the father, then that would clarify things. I would get the marriage cert first. Fingers crossed! Merry

Just seen this thread a was thinking that if you say the names Fielding and Fielden out load, depending on your acent they sound the same I have alot of ancesters that used various spellings on certificates some literate and others illiterate so I personally would try not to worry to much about spelling as long as the names sound alike examples I have are Osborn, Osborne, Osburn Tournay, tourney, tornay, torney, tournai, even up to Tirnay Veale, Veel, Veal Jukes and Dukes (one and the same name)

I have a marriage certificate where the groom's name is given as Richard Applitt whereas I know that his name was Richard Habberley. I am certain that it is the right marriage as everything else fits perfectly. But then, if the parties concerned cannot read, then what is on a certificate is only going to be as good as what the minister, or for a birth or death, the registrar, thinks that they have heard. You only need someone with a broad accent who mumbles, and the whole thing can get completely garbled. No, I only trust certificates UNTIL PROVED OTHERWISE!!! Tina

Merry, Now you asked that would make sense as one of the navy deaths I had letters that referred to him being in the navy. I can't advise definitely as the birth and marriage was registered by the Maltese Civil Reg system rather than in the overseas British section.

Merry

Merry Report 18 Jun 2006 11:26

I didn't know that, Kate. Thanks. Pippa, Would the RA before the Vol number refer to Royal Artillery? Merry

Just to add that Woolwich may not seem as strange as it seems compared to Malta. I have Maltese person in my hubby's family from the G G Grandad being in the Royal Artillery. I then wondered why they went from Malta to Woolwich and the answer of course is that the Royal Artillery are stationed there!

The overseas stuff is FREE to search on Family Relatives, but you have to have bought some units first.....you just don't spend any on that section! Merry

Merry, they often have one entry for the actual birth and one for the baptism on those indexes, so at least two of them could be for the same person. Kate.

There are these two birth regs: GRO ARMY CHAPLAINS BIRTH INDICES 1840-1843 Malta Page 326 Catherine Fielding 1840-1843 Malta Page 447 Catherine Fielding UPDATE - and this one: Birth GRO REGIMENTAL BIRTH INDICES SUP 1761-1924 1841 Malta Vol RA 20 Page 99 Catherine Fielding I wonder if they are all the same person? I dont always trust certs. I have an Eliza Leivers who, on her marriage cert, is 'Eliza Lievers'. And a Waldis Krilovs who is Waldis KRILOUS. One of my relations didnt like their 1st name, so decided to only put their middle name on a marriage cert. Without the help of GR members, I wouldnt have known she was 'my' ancestor at all.

Kate

Kate Report 18 Jun 2006 10:53

Andrea, I have a Sarah Ann GOLDEN in my tree who is Sarah Ann GOLDING on her marriage registration, and it is definitely the right one (her husband had a unique name, and they have her father living with them on one of the censuses). So I would say, go for it. Kate.

Andrea I cant see any other likely marriage for Robert, I think you are going to have to invest £7 and keep your fingers crossed. Have you looked for Catherine's birth on the overseas births on 1837 online? Georgina.

I have ancestors GOWEN/GOWING. The records show both names until they became literate & opted for GOWING at the end of the 19C.
