Hi All Am I imagining it or have I read somewhere that thise could be one and the same thing? I have received a DC today and it lists the informant as Step Daughter of the same address. I have absolutely no idea who this person is, only that the person who died had 2 children, 1 died in childhood and the other, my gt grandfather - I cannot track down anywhere. Any suggestions??

Meant to say - his son did marry and his wife I've lost track of too. My big quest!!! We thought that she remarried after he died in War but cannot find any record of him dying or who she remarried....

'Daughter in law' can mean step daughter, but I don't think Step daughter would mean anything else but step daughter. Did the person who died marry twice. This step daughter would seem to be the daughter of his wife or partner. Can you give us some names and dates? Kath. x

His wife died 9 years later and it says that she was the widow of this person and lists his occupation, which ties in with DC and his sons' marriage certificate. I did wonder whether I had correct person but everything else ties in.

Sorry just realise what you meant Him and the only wife I know were married aged 22 and 20 so she must have been the 1st wife and for the reasons I gave above, he couldn't have married after....could he?

Even though his wife was only 20 when she married him, she could have had a daughter before they married. This would be his step daughter. Kath. x

True Kath!! Never considered that! But wouldn't she have appeared on a census with her somewhere?

What name does it give for the step daughter who is the informant on the death certificate? (my grandmother was born before her mother married and was always listed on the census with her grandmother and not her mother). Kath. x

V M Masters I was hoping that it would provide a cluse somewhere as to what happened with Clarence and his wife!! Her address was same was his at time of death. I've found a Vera Maud Masters born 1907 in Bristol but that might not have been when she was born or Masters could be her married name? She could have been born in same area as her mother?

Just checked through census I have for Winifred's family and nobody with correct initials. Think I might go and sleep on it and maybe a fresh pair of eyes in morning....?

If Winifred had this daughter before she married then the daughter would be called V.M. Wheeler at birth. You would need to look for a marriage for someone of this name to someone called Masters. Going by all of the dates, this marriage could be any time from the early 1900's onwards. Sorry I have to leave the computer now. Hope you can sort out who she is. Good luck. Kath. x

Are there anymore ideas?? I have searched for births for V M Wheelers and not really come up with anything that would match?

With respect to Kathleen, I think that step and in-law are interchangeable either way. I have a widowed lady described as Step Mo. when living with one married daughter and Wife's Mother when living with her other married daughter, in different census years. Roger

I have found this marriage which is probably your Great Grandfather. The marriage certificate would give you his wife's name (don't know if you already have this):- Clarence Mortimer Mason June qtr. 1908, Bristol, 6a, 356 I've just had a thought (should have them more often, lol) - is the death certificate hand written or a photocopy. If it was hand written, there is the chance that the person writing it out wrote Masters instead of Mason for the 'step daughter' and then it would be possible for her to be 'daughter-in-law' instead. You could ring wherever you ordered it from and ask them to check the name for you. Kath. x

Thank you Roger Hi Kathleen Yes I have that certificate and the woman he married was Dora Ethel Altree who is the other person who I can't find out what happened to. The certificate is from the GRO so I shall give them a call. Still don't know who the VM could be?

Just had a thought - gonna have to stop having them... The copy I have from GRO was because I wrote to Bristol and it had been destroyed in the war, do they write them out at the GRO?
