There's an article about Aliases on Genuki (see the bit about copyhold): http://genuki(.)cs.ncl.ac.uk/DEV/DevonMisc/AliasesDiscriminant.html (remove brackets) Merry

This is what the OPC has online from PR's: Parish Registers Baptisms 1735-1749, 1750-1774, 1775-1786, 1787-1812, 1813-1837 Marriages 1735-1837 Burials 1735-1837 Banns 1754 - 1797 I've looked for Green - Churchill marriages, Daniel's bap without luck. Tried baps of children the sons/daus of daniel and Ann: 14 04 1823 James GREEN son of Daniel & Anne; Gillingham; Labourer 19 06 1831 Hannah CHURCHILL daughter of Daniel & Ann; Gillingham; Labourer Note there is a Hannah Green in their home in 1841. Nightmare!! It might be to do with copyhold tenancy. Though he is recorded as an ag lab rather then a tennant farmer. Merry

Thanks Merry - you're brilliant! Thank goodness THAT name didn't carry on down the family tree!!

Merry

Merry Report 26 Jun 2006 10:53

Addresses: 1861: (I went back a few sheets!) - Bowridge H Road, Gillingham 1851: No addresses recorded in Gillingham 1841: looks like ''Peasemarsh'', Gillingham. Several families are recorded there. Merry

Merry

Merry Report 26 Jun 2006 10:46

In 1861 there was no address listed. Will look at the others in a minute. This could be the marriage of Daniel and Ann: Gillingham PR's from Dorset online Parish Clerk: 1821 10-Dec Daniel GREEN otp & Ann MILES otp I can't see a baptism for Daniel (Green or Churchill!) on the baptism transcripts on the same site. This may be Ann's baptism: 20 03 1803 Ann MILES daughter of Gracious & Fanny Flippin' Eck! ''Gracious Miles'' lol! Merry

Merry Report 26 Jun 2006 10:33

Well, this is very odd!!!!!! Note the names in the 1841 census I posted. I did check the page and they were def called GREEN. Now...............These people, below, are surely the same individuals as before, but they have an additional child, Charles. The surname on the image is def CHURCHILL (maybe they had a premonition about Winston??!) 1851: Ann Churchill abt 1804 Gillingham, Dorset, England Wife Gillingham Dorset Charles Churchill abt 1845 Gillingham, Dorset, England Son Gillingham Dorset Daniel Churchill abt 1794 Gillingham, Dorset, England Head Gillingham Dorset Ezekiel Churchill abt 1833 Gillingham, Dorset, England Son Gillingham Dorset Mary Ann Churchill abt 1827 Gillingham, Dorset, England Daughter Gillingham Dorset Tom Churchill abt 1840 Gillingham, Dorset, England Son Gillingham Dorset Very strange indeed! hiya, i'm not too sure about 1871 myself, but am still looking, what was his occupation on m.cert please? also witnesse's to marriage? Julie

Chris

Chris Report 26 Jun 2006 10:29

Sorry - forgot to answer question! On marriage cert. he gives his occupation as Labourer as is his father Daniel. Thanks for your efforts! Chris

Chris

Chris Report 26 Jun 2006 10:25

Yup - that's them. I'm not sure about the 1871 info as I have Mary Ann's Birth Cert. and she was born in Portsmouth. However, they seem to have handled the truth somewhat carelessly at times.
