On the birth certificate of my grandad, in the when and where born box, it says under the address u. s. w. He was born in Stockton on Tees in 1883 and I was wondering if this could be anything to do with a workhouse. It would be very helpful if anyone knows what it means. Cheryl

Are you sure it's not USD - Urban Sanitary District? Urban Sanitary Districts existed nationally from 1875 to 1894. Merry

I'd go with Merry's suggestion. It is probably a curly D. Kath. x

You know it could be a D but its not joined at the top, but I'm still non the wiser, what does urban sanitary district mean? Thanks Cheryl

It's just a level of local government who dealt with public health issues. See this site: http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/types/type_page.jsp?unit_type=SAN_DIST Merry

The words Urban Sanitary District normally appear at the top of the certificate, not in the address box. If these letters do appear in the address box, I would be more inclined to think it IS the workhouse - some of the more sensitive registrars were beginning to not write the word workhouse on a BC, because of the shame it provoked. I am def not saying your letters do not relate to the workhouse, BUT!!! every single one of my USD's, RSD's and UD's etc appear under the event address in the main part of the certificate. Why's that then???!! Merry

Hmmm..okay, I dont have any BCs in the correct time frame! All I have is a couple of death certs and two marriage certs. All state USD along the top, none say USD in the address box - but all have full addresses in the address box, could that be summat to do with it? Is there a full address in the address box? OC
