Your next step would be to buy William Lyon's birth cert to confirm his mum's maiden name (and confirm the above is all correct!!) If you think you will be sticking with this hobby then a sub to Ancestry at a little over £1 a week (if you subscribe annually) is worth it's weight in gold!! Merry

hiya, you can search for free births marriages deaths, on www*ancestry*co*uk, you will need the complete index, which covers 1837-2004, or there is freebmd, but this is no means complete. to have access to census from 1841-1901 ancestry is the best site i think to use, you can buy a subscription for about 70 quid i think it is for the year, i may be wrong, sure someone will put me right :)) Julie

I have found real value in subscribing to Ancestry. I'd been doing my tree for years using free resources (though I had to do a fair bit of pay per view for my Scottish rellies). Then I blew my birthday money on an annual Ancestry sub. and suddenly the world was my lobster. I'm still too tight to fork out for certificates but seeing actual census images is magic. The Scottish records are good value if you use common sense (marriage register images cost a pound). The garden has gone totally to pot.
