Assuming you haven't discounted anything out of the ''right'' area, and also tried different spellings... registration wasn't compulsory till 1875. I have heard estimates of 15% missing. Two of mine don't appear to be registered, from 1841 & 1844. They married each other LOL

hi have tried all sorts of spelling and leaving out the surname just searching on first names , seems strange because they were a very wealthy family I cannot think why they would not register the births of all the children but you do make some sense as there isnt just one missing, maybe you are right.I wondered if maybe the children were not the husbands and he took them on .

Val, Looks like you got these names from the 1861 census. Have you tried to find them in another and see what the surname is then? Rose

Before compulsory registration was introduced, many families simply didn't register births; in many cases, they couldn't afford it. I thought Camberwell was Surrey................. Reg

there are some registrations for EVITT children in Camberwell in the 1840s. All have rather posh-sounding first names. Do you know if these are relatives?

Vicky Report 17 Aug 2006 21:07

I just did a quick search on FreeBMD - sometimes I find the results are easier to follow than the Ancestry listings. They are supposed to use the same database. Its a bit slow tonight - I was trying a search for soundalikes but its timed out. Looks like Camberwell has been transcribed though. have you tried looking for baptisms - if none of these births are registered that might be your next best bet.

Merry Report 17 Aug 2006 21:14

I know that when civil reg was first introduced some people were very much against it for various reasons. One was the infringement of civil liberties (government poking their nose into private business) and also the idea that a child is named before God at baptism and this should be sufficient. The well-to-do would be quite happy to ignore the registrar if they were against registration in principal. There are some very vociferous letters printed in The Times newspaper to this effect!
