I am trying to untangle this from the 1851 Census. Elizabeth Rushforth is my GGGmother. The Aldersons are confusing me.

Elizabeth Rushforth (cant read occupation) abt 1832 Barnsley, Yorkshire, England Daughter Barnsley Yorkshire Hannah Rushforth abt 1786 ??, Yorkshire, England Wife Barnsley Yorkshire John Rushforth (Stone Mason) abt 1785 Barnsley, Yorkshire, England Head Barnsley Yorkshire Margaret Alderson abt 1850 Barnsley, Yorkshire, England Granddaughter Barnsley Yorkshire Martha Alderson abt 1829 Barnsley, Yorkshire, England Daughter (Married) Barnsley Yorkshire Thomas Alderson abt 1839 Barnsley, Yorkshire, England Grandson Barnsley Yorkshire William Alderson abt 1848 Barnsley, Yorkshire, England Grandson Barnsley Yorkshire I can't find the Marriage of Martha to an Alderson, and she couldn't be the mother of Thomas as she would have been just 10yo.

It looks to me that John's occupation is LINEN WEAVER, Hannah is Weaver's wife and Elizabeth is weaver's daughter - but isn't there a generation missing in the middle? Jim

I have Elizabeth's marriage cert and her father is John a Weaver. Thomas Alderson is down as Grandson, born 1839. Possibly that is a wrong date and should be 1849?

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 22 Aug 2006 11:26

As Thomas's age is correct......his occ is miner........perhaps he was the son of Martha's husband from a previous marriage. Do you have any info about the husband? The other option is that Thomas's surname was not Alderson.............and the ditto marks were inaccurate Reg

Unknown Report 22 Aug 2006 11:28

I know nothing at all about the Aldersons.. I didn't know about Martha until we checked the 1851.

Linda, It does look very likely. That Thomas is the bugbear. A marriage in 1845 at the age of 16 is unusual but not impossible with children born in 1848 and 1850.

Hi Reg, Thanks for the suggestion, it is always possible. I think I need to apply for their Marriage Cert now that we have a date for it. thanks.

Do you have any comments about the Alderson info? Reg

Unknown

Unknown Report 22 Aug 2006 15:31

Hi Reg, Thanks for your help. It certainly is indicating that Martha married John Alderson and had several children. I must assume, for the present, that Thomas was a Rushforth and the brother of Martha and Elizabeth. It will have to wait until I have spare cash to buy the certificates. Thanks again, Jim

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 22 Aug 2006 15:37

The image quite clearly has Thomas as Grandson..........and I would think that to be correct. He is unlikely to be the son of John and Hannah.........their ages rather preclude that possibility. Reg

Unknown

Unknown Report 22 Aug 2006 15:41

He's even less likely to be Martha's son as she would have only been 10. So, something must be wrong. Maybe Thomas's age. If John was previously married I will find out from the Marriage Cert.
