Jackie to get bmd on Ancestry you need to register first is free. You should then be able to get bmd complete 1837 - 1983. Good look with your searching. Jelly

Hi Shirley, Rose, Christine, and Jelly, Thanks so much for all your help. Ive found them in all the census's even 1841. So I now know williams father and mothers first name ( not last as yet ). 1901 they were listed as Teen. 1881 listed as Tear. 1851 listed as Tuer ( tho images actuallly shows Teer). Whats confusing me is why William and Lillian would have married 20 odd years after the first child was born ( James ). Could this be a second marriage? If it was would the marriage cert show children present? Jelly, I am subscribed to Ancestry. But cant make head or tale of the free bmd. Doesnt show parents. Unless I am doing the wrong thing. Think I better order some certs, to see if mothers name was different. This may prove it? Can I order these online ( since I am in OZ ). ? jackie

The usual reason for a very late marriage was that a previous spouse was still alive. And sorry, but the marriage cert won't show any details of children - if ONLY they did!!! Yes, you can order on line from the GRO, or print off an order form from Lancsbmd - I don't know how you go about paying for it from abroad but I am sure there are instructions on both sites. Good luck OC

Hi OC. Thanks for that. Interesting if previous spouse was still alive........How would I find that info? Just been to lancs BMD but cant find any of the births even using soundex? Jackie

I found this on the lancs web site about payment. POSTAL APPLICATIONS If you apply by post please complete this form and enclose a stamped addressed envelope and the appropriate fee in sterling. Information about the cost of certificates may be obtained from any register office. All remittances should be made payable to the appropriate authority as given here and cheques should be crossed '/& Co/' Do not send cash. This application form should be sent to the Superintendent Registrar of the district where the marriage occurred. Do not use this form for making applications to the REGISTRAR GENERAL. I was wondering if it could be possible that William and Lillian married before James was born and if it is possible that it was a Catholic wedding? Would it be also possible that they could have left it until years later to get the marriage confirmed? If I'm not mistaken weren't Catholic marriages not classified as legal unless you had it confirmed by a registrar? Could this explain the lateness in marriage? Do you mean if the children attended the marriage? If so then they would only appear on the marriage cert if the were witnessess. If they aren't old enough I shouldn't think they would be on the cert. My marriage certs only list fathers name and occupation and the witnesses involved as well as the registrar - if in attendance

Shirley, Im pretty sure that they were not Catholic. My FIL has some written notes which says they were Wesleyan, at least Lillian was. Funny thing is he recalls that the family came from the Isle of Man ' sometime in the middle of the 19th century ', but since Ive got them back to 1841, all born Manchester, this would be impossible. Oc's suggestion seems more likely, but why on earth would they not marry just because previous spouse is still alive? Seems odd to me. Jackie

Portland Rose posted: Births Jun 1891 Teer Leo Manchester 8d 295 If this is the birth you mean, the GRO ref is the Volume Number (8d) and the Page Number (295) You asked why they wouldn't marry when a previous spouse was alive (possibly)?........Well it would be illegal! Bigamy was fairly commonplace compared to today because divorce was not something easy to accomplish.........but some people preferred to ''live in sin'' than commit a crime, so they might wait and, if a previous spouse died, get married afterwards! This might be what happened with your couple. My hubby's gg-grandfather married in 1839 and left his wife in 1845(ish)....he got through two more ''wives'' (no ceremony, but eash called themselves Mrs X) before his real wife died in 1879. He then married his fourth ''bride'' (really second) in 1880. Merry

I do hope things work out for you Jaqueline I don't spend all my time on the site. I just pay visits now and again. I haven't bothered with the 'community' section before, but I decided to take a look and noticed you needed a bit of help. So I went to see what I come come up with to add to the help you'd had already. My tree on genes is more like a 'world tree'. My own family side of the tree hasn't been going too clever really and I'm waiting for certs myself to fill in the blanks. I can't even find my granddad's marriage on lancsbmd. I regularly check to see if it has been added, but as of yet no luck. Good luck to all on genes. Hope your trees blossom and continue to grow healthy.
