Morning Stephen Think I agree with Alexandra on this one, I would order one of the kids certs and see what Matilda's maiden name is - it is very possible that a registrar would spell it how he heard it and it not be corrected - see where it leads you. regards Looby

If it was Amelia Emma Bird, she is a servant in 1891 for a Caroline E Dean - a 75 year old widow.

Well I've had a look at the 1901 image and it does say Matilda. Steve, you have to not be so rigid on spellings of surnames. I think you need to remember that not all people knew exactly how to spell back then and that if they weren't sure themselves, they wouldn't know whether to correct it on a register for a marriage or birth etc. I think your best bet would be to order a birth cert for one of their children to find her maiden name - then see if any of the Matilda's from the possible marriages match up with her. Think you're going to have to order one of the kids certs to find her maiden name then try again. What's the census ref, do you want us to have a look at it to make sure you're reading it right. regards Looby

Stephen Report 29 Sep 2006 17:36

Sprack

Sprack Report 29 Sep 2006 17:33

where did you get that reference number from steve?

Trudy

Trudy Report 29 Sep 2006 17:32

Hi Steve Presume the below is what you are seeing: Surname First name(s) District Vol Page -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Marriages Dec 1891 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bird Amelia Emma St. Olave 1d 558 Crook Emma St. Olave 1d 558 James George Frederick St. Olave 1d 558 Western Albert John St. Olave 1d 558 Where did you get the reference from initially? Do you have any children for them - if you order one of their birth certs it will give you Matilda's maiden name then you can have another look. the other alternative is that there is another Albert Western - try looking on the 1901 for him with one of these other women, that would then rule this reference out. Regards Looby PS - have just had a look, no trace of Albert or Amelia on the 1901 but Emma is living as Emma James, happily married to George Frederick in Hackney.

J Report 29 Sep 2006 17:31

It could be that the marriage you are looking for has not been added to the website as yet. I have just checked and couldnt find one, otr they could be mistranscribed. You could try on Ancestry where you can look for them quarter by quarter if you know a year then it will be easier if you dont it could take ages to find them Good luck Julie
