How would I start finding out details about my GG grandmother when all the information I have is her name was Laura Preston she had a child called Edward Sheridan in 1890 poss Wigan area (I don´t know if they had any more) and that my GG grandfather was also called Edward. Please help me as I have hit yet another brick wall. Thank You Claire

Clair have you tried looking on the 1901 census in Wigan for them?

Unknown

Unknown Report 14 Oct 2006 15:15

YOu could find the Sheridan birth cert which would give a birth address and also state whether or not Laura was married. This would help find her on the nearest census.

Unknown Report 14 Oct 2006 15:19

Was Preston her maiden or married name? Was Sheridan a surname or a middle name?

Jools

Jools Report 14 Oct 2006 15:19

Was Laura called PRESTON before or after she married?

Jools

Jools Report 14 Oct 2006 15:26

PM from Claire. PRESTON was the maiden name.

Jools

Jools Report 14 Oct 2006 15:29

So what we need to know now Claire is if SHERIDAN was her married name or whether it was a middle name given to Edward

Unknown

Unknown Report 14 Oct 2006 15:31

There's an Edward Sheridan b. 1890 Wigan in the census, but his parents are Dominik and Louisa.

Jools Report 14 Oct 2006 15:32

Claire - can I ask where you've got your information from please?

Jools

Jools Report 14 Oct 2006 15:33

Nell - I think I saw 3 or 4 edward sheridan births 1890-1892 in wigan area. I can't get any 1891 matches using edw* and lau* which look likely. (Not even found Laura on 1881 yet) Jools

No marriage on Freebmd for Laura Preston in Lancs to anyone called Sheridan. Claire Where did you get Laura's name from? Is it possible it was a middle name, or that she was previously married, or other variations?

To be honest I have been given this information from family members and am not that sure how reliable it is. So the only information I know is that my GG Grandfather Edward Sheridan had children Edward b 1910 (my Grandfather) Laura b 1915 Edna b ? Ernie b? Louis b? with my GG Grandmother Laura b 1890. I was told her maiden name was Preston but again I have no information to prove whether this is correct or not or whether they infact did marry? I do know their dates of birth are correct because that is what is on their head stone. They are both buried in Ashcroft Cemetry Salford along with my grandad Edward. It so difficult because unfortunately nobody in my dads side of the family talk to each other or know anything about their family history. So this is why I have decided to try and put the pieces together if I can not only for him but for us as well. Thank you for your help so far. I really do appreciate it.

Oops, Laura's son Edward has slipped from being born in 1890 to being born in 1910 :-) You need to check that date and then look for his birth entry on the GRO index. If you buy his birth certificate you will know for sure his parents' names and can then look for their marriage.

Jools

Jools Report 14 Oct 2006 21:31

I don't think he has slipped Judith. Edward seems to run through the family as a christian name. I read it as Edward Sheridan born c1890 married Laura preston and they had a son called Edward about 1910.

Claire - following on from our ealier pm's:- Laura born 1915 Birth Certificate info is JAS 1915 Laura SHERIDAN mother's maiden name PRESTON, Salford vol 8d page 57 Edward born 1910 (your grandad), was actually born 1909!! Edward SHERIDAN JFM 1909 (no mother's maiden name, they didn't start entering this till a couple of years later), Salford vol 8d page 14 MARRIAGE Laura PRESTON to Edward SHERIDAN OND 1907 Salford 8d 83 So what you need to do know is order the marriage certificate. It will give you ages, father's names and occupations plus address they gave at time of marriage. The marriage witness names may also come in handy, as they're very often relatives. Jools

Reg - are you sure you've typed that info right?? That looks more like the marriage of a brother (and that may confuse Claire as she's not got to the brother stage yet :))

Jools Copied and pasted............ You posted a birth for Laura 1915.........possible parents. Both events in Salford. I thought Claire was looking in Wigan............. Reg

Reg - Claire is very new to this game and has been working with info given her by family. We've had various pm's today and I think it's safe to say that Claire's last big post is about as close as she can get at the moment. Which is why I'm suggesting she gets the 1907 MC I've just posted. Wigan may be a red herring (or not). Salford certainly doesn't look to be :)) Jools
