Frances Those of us who have been around on GR for a while would always advise not to buy any units through this site. There are much better ways to find out the info you need....... This board is about helping each other.............if you need some info.......or advice about how to find it.............just ask! I see that you only joined 5 days ago...........give things a chance! Reg

Hi Frances. Don't despair! It's just a case of finding your way around. There are lots of folks on GR who will give you all the help you need regarding tips on research, look ups etc. Its amazing what knowledge people have on here. Don't be afraid to ask for help:) I was absolutely 'lost' when I first joined, I didn't have a clue! Regards Ann

Can I point you in the direction of the threads which have been posted to help new members......just put 'newbies' in the search box at the top...........it really is worth taking the time to read the threads, and absorb all the tips and helpful advice. You'll soon find your way around..........but bear in mind that GR is not a site which holds any records whatsoever..........any units you may have purchased are for other sites. Reg

Frances, If, as Reg says, you only joined 5 days ago, then wait a couple of weeks. 'Hot Matches' are sent out about once a fortnight. Have you ticked the box that says you want to be advised of these? If you haven't then you need to go into 'My Account Details' and do this. You can also put the names of your ancestors into the 'Quick Search' box at the top of the page to see if anyone else has these names in their tree. Kath. x

Frances Are you sure of the dates? He'd have been about 100 years old in 1970 wouldn't he? I'm looking on the freebmd site for a possible birth .... Heather

Was going to try and help, Frances, but got a little confused. You say Charlie was born 1873 but threw himself off the balcony in the 1970's. You mean he did that when he was about 100 years old? Margaret

Heather Report 21 Jan 2007 23:39

The standard way to go is start with what you know and make a tree going backwards from yourself. Then dates and relationships need tracking. Probably will need a couple of certificates to check names and dates. Work BACK to you g g grandfather, checking names and dates. Cheers Jennifer

I know he does seem very elusive, ive heard he lived a very colourfull life, and did not live strictly by the book. I should get my grandmother alice's birth certificate and marriage certificate. he should show up on that. thanks for everyones advice Im off to do some research starting at the begining.

There you go Frances, it's not such a bad site is it :) Like I said it just takes time to get to know your way around. Researching can get a litttle confusing sometimes but there's always someone on here who will point you in the right direction. The help I have recieved from others has been invaluable. There are a lot of free family history sites web sites to look at too. Just Google Free BMD + you will find some. Regards Ann
