This isn't poor Mary in 1901 is it? It does seem to fit with her being sent to Canada as a Home Child in 1903! Ignore the Married ........ that's a mis-transcription!! Also the actual image for birth says Unknown followed by ditto mark under London on line above, followed by 'probably Kensington or Chelsea' added in another hand about Mary Archer Name: Mary Archer Age: 10 Estimated birth year: abt 1891 Relation: Married Gender: Female Where born: Unknown Probably Kensington or Chelsea Civil Parish: Ewell Ecclesiastical parish: St Mary the Virgin County/Island: Surrey Country: England Street address: Occupation: Condition as to marriage: Education: Employment status: View image Registration district: Epsom Sub-registration district: Epsom ED, institution, or vessel: Kensington and Chelsea Schools Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 1 Household Members: Name Age Mary Archer 10 Pauper Scholar

Have you considered the possibility that Henry (and possibly the rest of the fmaily) emigrated?? I've just been doing a quick look, and cannot find Sarah, William or the young Patrick on the 1901 Census. I haven't checked Deaths to see if they died between 1891 and 1901 Sylvia

Consider the following possibilities:- Children were put into those schools because their parents could not care for them, because they were orphaned, or because no relatives would take responsibility. Children were sent en masse to Canada, Australia, and New Zaland as Home Children, and many of them ended up being used basically as slaves on farms and in homes in those countries. The 'charities' that did this did not always inform the parents or other relatives that the children were to be sent overseas ............. and the children were often told, falsely, that mom/dad were dead and/or not coming back for them. There was very little consultation carried on. One of the darkest periods in the history of children's charities in the UK. ...... and one of the biggest offenders so far as shipping them to Canada was concerned was Dr Barnardo's!! On the other hand, many of the schools, particularly in the London area, did do a very good job of educating children who otehrwise would not have received an education. I wonder if Henry did die, or emigrate, leaving his child to the tender mercies of ............................??????
