Possible for James marriage? Would put his birth c 1733 which would work for Detective's moons theory.

Not my moon theory, but MarieCeleste :-D

The only FMP entry on the Cheshire Wills index, despite putting in 1826 is

First name(s) John
Last name Thorneley
Occupation Weaver
Residence Great Bolton
Probate year 1814
County Cheshire
Country England
Record set Cheshire Wills and Probate

Image reads
24th Oct Before J Brocklebank (Senior?)

Apologies Marie Celeste and Detective!

No problem!

May be the 1826 Will contains instructions regarding his MI and the reason. If David didn't want to pay the £4 for a copy, perhaps the descendents would?

We're all agog now.

Doh! So it is.
Its all about bequests – he was a very generous person – but nothing obvious about his headstone.

MargaretM Report 11 Nov 2015 20:56

I'm still confused about why you found it necessary to get the descendants' permission to post details from a gravestone of someone who died almost 200 years ago? This couple possibly have hundreds of descendants, even thousands. Did you contact them all?

Andysmum Report 11 Nov 2015 22:15

According to the link I posted, it was his express wish that his age be shown in moons on both his headstone and on the plate on his coffin.

He was a very eccentric man, and obviously had some odd ideas.

Do you have access to Findmypast? If not, you could take out a free 14 day trial – make sure that you turn auto-renew off if you choose to do that.
Some libraries have access under licence. It’s worth checking.

If you don’t have access, we’d be happy to download and forward to you.

Select All Categories.
Complete first and last name boxes James & Thorneley
Put 1826 in the When box (my earlier mistake was putting the 1826 in the Death box)
Then Cheshire Wills and Probate as the Record set

The top result of 3 is the one you want.
Transcript is as Chris in Sussex posted

Phew! Glad it worked.
Its just a pity that he didn't leave instructions in his Will about the headstone. He might be chuckling if he were to realise how, nearly 200 years later, total strangers are trying to discover the reasoning.
