Relationships aren't shown on the 1841 census and although often a presumption is made, it can't be taken as a given. Yes, I would think, but can't prove that Ann Lamb is Elizabeth's mother on the 1841 census

Linda

Linda Report 20 Apr 2015 14:51

so i take it she was a lamb by birth and ann lamb in the 1841 census was her mother and not mother inlaw ... yes ?

From the example/s put up by mgnv from the baptismal registers-

Apart from what looks like the illegitimate births, every entry on both pages shows the mother to be "late - and then surname"

I would take this to be the vicar being very obliging to us family historians and putting in the maiden names of the mother. Either that or the parish had a lot of second marriages!

So I would take it that
eg William and Sarah (nee Bloggs) Smith had a child Fred Smith

or in your instance
James Morrison born to William Morrison and his wife Elizabeth, previously known as Thompson, nee Lamb

Lamb late Thompson means Lamb now but used to be Thompson.

Here's an example from my wife's tree (referring to Entry 949 of):

If she married Morrison using the surname Thompson, then her maiden name was Lamb

Otherwise, she'd have married as LAMB
