I have seen the name German before on census records.

I have just had a look at a site for old boys names and it gives this:-

Name:German:

Origin Latin - meaning Brother.

Origin Russian - meaning Soldier.

Possible death for James Harry/Harold Ashman, although out of area:-

Registration district: Ampthill
County: Bedfordshire
Year of registration: 1948
Quarter of registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
Age at death: 52

The birth year would be about right but only buying the certificate would tell you for sure if it's the right one.

I think this is James Harold Ashman's birth:-

Name: ASHMAN, James Harry (note it's Harry and not Harold)
Registration district: Thingoe
County: Suffolk
Year of registration: 1896
Quarter of registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
Mother's maiden name: Not available before 1911 Q3
Volume no: 4A

Thingoe registration district covers Depden which is given as James's birth place on the 1911 census.

Michelle said that her grandad's father's mother had the surname Swann, so I think what we have found is correct. It's her grandad's grandmother who is Rhoda Swann.

Unless I have completely lost the plot with this, lol.

GlitterBaby Report 6 Sep 2012 14:27

Looks like you will have to buy some certs to confirm the middle name of James and what the name and occupation of his father was.
