Well I did ask GR to clarify where exactly in the guide lines and T & C did it apply to my posting.

Got a reply late this afternoon

Dear Maureen

Thank you for your email,

Please see the message board guidelines:

Please refrain from advertising any businesses, competitor or other, on the Genes Reunited Message Boards.

Please do not use the service for any business or commercial or charitable purpose, or to promote any alternative commercial service.

Please note Maureen, that as a commerical bussiness we cannot have members discussing the functionality of any commercial website as I am sure you can understand.

Well quite frankly I do not understand :-P

Re "Please note Maureen, that as a commerical bussiness we cannot have members discussing the functionality of any commercial website as I am sure you can understand."

whoever typed that needs retraining, and the lack of consistency in replies from staff is increasing.

Apart from the grammar not having been checked, there are two spelling mistakes; and, again, the member of staff that typed the reply to GB is disagreeing with Estelle's categorical response that members can post about other sites provided that we do not say that they are better than genes reunited; Estelle is a Product Executive.

"Please refrain from advertising any businesses, competitor or other, on the Genes Reunited Message Boards.

Can someone/anyone clarify please -

What is "any business, competitor or other" and "any alternative commercial site"?

Would that be ANY/ALL other genealogy sites (aka a business and/or competitor) and alternative commercial site - so, for example, if I am unable find what I want here i.e. Scottish or Irish records - am I allowed to ask but not permitted to receive an answer (it might advertise another competitor site/library/local council website).

Also if I ask for help on these Boards and someone is able to locate/produce a record I have been unable to find - Am I allowed to ask where they found it? If not how can I be sure that it is an accurate or real record? OR can we only search/share information available in records on here?

If I search for a record for someone who asks a question but maybe does not have access to the same records as I do - and then provide it on here (at no charge) - would that be contravening the charitable aspect?

I would be grateful if it could be clarified as I do not want to ask for or supply information and go against the message board guidelines.

I am confused - and just when I was getting into the message boards and threads sharing information aspect of the site.

what piffle!!!!

members have for years asked if anyone is having a problem with this or that site.

We HAVE been through this before ....... and there is a legal basis behind not posting verbatim censuses, etc .......... which is why one makes changes on the censuses before posting them!!

remove all extraneous material

add information

and then it cannot be said that you have copied it straight from that other site, whichever it might be.

It has more to do with the other site threatening GR than with GR I believe ...................... we are all members of ancestry, fmp, etc as private members ............. and both those sites can ban you if they feel you are using too many records for too many names. That falls under professional researchers.

Yet, GR does indeed depend on members finding information for other members.

Always has ................... and that help has been a selling point for them for many years.

If they stop it ......... then there is no point in me being on this site, because I do not use my tree, nor do I need to use the records.

Will probably get another warning for copying and pasting from their email.

I give it only until tomorrow morning before it gets whooshed.

Agree with Sylvia on this one
"If they stop it ......... then there is no point in me being on this site, because I do not use my tree, nor do I need to use the records."

Another nail in the coffin :-(

But I could always renew my membership on another site which loads of GR members also belong to ;-)

Does this mean we can not mention the website run by Ron and Carol who do the tree printing ? Or mention any family history fairs as they are a commercial business ? Or family tree/history magazines ?

Thats a bummer :-P

I have often seen queries from members on other sites asking about problems they are having with GR.
The other sites donĀ“t seem to get their underwear in a twist about it.

SylviaInCanada Report 21 Aug 2012 07:56

GR hasn't done it in the past either!
