My friends father many years ago tried to get his birth cert but as it was in Somerset House at the time of the fire many years ago he was told ob no.

I think i know the answer but would there be anywhere else that might have held duplicates.

Thanks Pam

I've just Googled various combinations of fire, Somerset House, birth certs, etc and the only thing I have found is reference to war stuff destroyed in 1943.

The original would still be available at the Registrar's office where the birth was registered. Sorry. Meds to combat migraine making my brain muzzy so I don't seem feel certain about anything right now.

See if you can find it on FreeBMD or if you can't, post details on here and one of us will try to find it for you.

Janice Report 8 Aug 2012 22:06

In 1905, the Romford Guardians decided to adopt the scattered homes system for its pauper children. Two large semi-detached houses were purchased for use as a receiving and probationary home. Initially, thirty children were housed there under the care of a foster mother and one assistant. On 24th September, 1907, Gertrude Smedley was appointed foster mother of the "cottage homes" at 3, Adelaide Villas, Mawneys, Romford — aged only 19 years she was the youngest ever foster mother employed by the union.. By 1914, there were children's Homes at 5-8 Laurie Square, and 1-2 the Croft, Heath Park Road. In 1914, there were scattered homes operating at Gilmore House, 36 Pelham Road, and Richmond House, 38 Pelham Road, Ilford. In 1929, there were homes at 26-28 Manor Road, 42-44 Brentwood Road, and on King Edward Road.

The address for that census was 5 Laurie Square, so looks like Charles was effectively in the workhouse.

Who were the witnesses on the marriage certificate? They might help find the right Charles in the 1911 census.

Who were the witnesses on his marriage cert? Also, if you have an address, it is possible to look at the electoral register to see if other occupants offer any clues.
