Think I can rule out the Edward, Minnie on 1911 census ?

According to a tree on Ancestry he was Edward Cornelius Downey married to Minnie Huntley, although the marriage reg gives him as only Edward, any thoughts...

Ah maybe the paper spelt the hostel wrong, he did live in Liverpool and had returned to his old stomping ground, he died in Wallasey after being taken to the Central Hospital...where he was dead on arrival and identified later by the police

I did see that one but ruled it out due to him living at Palermo St, Seacombe in 1903,4,5,6,and 7 but of course the Valuation List only names the main bill payer( or so I believe?), so, thinking about it again, he could have been married and then moved...

I think I need to get their marriage cert...

According to Google there was a BeVington Bush Hostel in Bevington Bush, Liverpool

By the second half of the 19th Century the Vauxhall/Scotland Road area was one of overcrowding, with streets filled with thick smoke and foul vapours, houses and courts squeezed in amongst industrial premises. The corporation had been demolishing unsanitary property since the 1860s and as an exemplary provision of working class housing had built St Martin's Cottages in 1869, the first council houses in England. It was not until the end of the century however that the Corporation replaced demolished housing on any scale. The prize-winning Victoria Square Dwellings were built in 1885, Juvenal Street Dwellings in 1890, Arley Street and Gildarts Gardens Dwellings in 1897. Between 1901 and 1907 further Dwellings were built in Dryden, Adlington, Kew, Kempston and Hornby Streets. The Eldon Street Labourer's Concrete Dwellings were built in 1905. Accommodation was also needed for the floating population of labourers and dockers, as many as 14,00 of whom, it was estimated at the end of the 19th century could be seeking lodgings each night. ****One attempt at solving this problem was the opening of the Bevington Bush Hotel (later Arden House) in 1900 by Liverpool People's Homes Ltd. This building offered 500 sleeping rooms, which were wonderfully clean and cheerful. They were for the sober working man, there being no admittance for the habitual drinker.******

Enlightened family housing wasn’t the answer for the transient population of labourers and dockers, who also needed a safe place to lay their head. By the end of the 19th century, up to 14,000 workers needed lodgings – many of whom saw sanctuary in the Bevington Bush Hotel, opened in 1900, offering 500 rooms for a penny a night. So long as you were sober.
The hotel became Arden House, and, eventually the city’s first Salvation Army refuge. It was demolished in 1986.

Could this be him, opposite side of the Mersey I think but only 5.11 miles apart. Edward was a dock labourer they had had 6 children 4 living. Married 10 years

It say's much the same BUT gives an address for him in 1915

Bebington Bush Hostel...which I guess is in the Birkenhead area.

For 1891 his Mum and Dad were in America, where they settled in 1909, without Edward...they are on 1901 census with the name Goss????

Edit...sorry I didnt answer your questions..I have searched family to see if he is lodging, under every variation of Downey I can think of, no joy. I'm sure I must be missing something but what ?

If I've got the right entry in the 1881 it looks as though he is living with his parents at number 19 or 21 (written as 1921 on original then 19 crossed through and re-entered again the same) and another family, same name are at number 17 (grandmother?) Have I got the right family? And if I have, have you looked at all the others to see if he might have been lodging/visiting at census time?

No other info on paper cutting other than he was found dead in Dock Rd, Seacombe by an on duty police officer and later identified by the police as Edward Downey. I guess he was known to the police if they could identify him !!

I got his birth from 1881 and 1891 census, he is with his Mum and Dad in 81 and Grandma in 91....they are all the correct people for my tree..

I think this is his Birth...Birkenhead, Seacombe etc are all in the same area. I think Egremont would come under Birkenhead Reg District...

Where did you get his birth from? I pressume from the 1891 census? It's just that you say he was born Egremont Cheshire but he doesn't show on FreeBMD

And I put Egremont and Birkenhead into Google just in case they were local but apparently nowhere near.

Hi Jillian, Seacombe and Birkenhead are very close. In fact the Mersey ferry stops at these 2 places as well as Liverpool.

Does the newspaper cutting give his occupation?
Maybe he was at sea for both census dates? Are there no other clues? His death is registered in Birkenhead which is another port so he looks like definate connections to the sea.
What other surname variations have you tried? Kind souls on here last week found my missing Busby family under 'Busley'

Sorry the outing took longer than expected!!

Shirley...Thank you for the census info and looking further, sadly, the Karlson's are not connected...I couldnt find him by name either, nor can I find him on the 1901. I did think if he could be found on 1911 it may give me a clue for 1901...the address was all I had to go on.

In 1891 I have him in Liscard with his Grandma, Jane Downey at 17 St Albans Rd
No idea about wife or children...There is no mention of a wife in the cutting I have of his death.
