Yes Chrystine they were a couple we were looking for (on my husband's side) and found them in the Mixed Marriages but there seems to be other indexes as well so you may find what you're looking for.
Good luck

I've got my grandad's WW1 service record.
My gran's name appears twice, firstly as n.o.k (I presume - the caption is burned off), and secondly, on a page giving details of his family, which lists his kids along with their d.o.b. This was updated when my aunt was born.
It also gives the date of his marr, but only my gran's marr name.
I have seen other WW1 service records that give the maiden surname and church, but that's not on mine.
Who knows why the army does anything, but I'd assumed his family structure would affect any pension paid to his widow in the event of his death.

Thanks to everyone for your help, I think the marriage must have been in a Maltese Church. thats going to be hard to find out. If anyone has any ideas about how that can be done i would be grateful.

Whats really frustrating is that the births only say that each child is recorded as a child of the marriage of 3355 george deakes, bachelor and helen hales widow. not even mothers maiden name.

Chrystine

Chrystine Report 22 Jan 2012 23:01

The boys births are both on his papers along with dates of baptisms his wife and daughter ethel are crossed through and over the wifes name is written deceased. its all very accurate which is why Im suprised not to be able to find the marriage.

No marriage record though !

Chrystine Report 22 Jan 2012 22:56

Hi Shirley yes you are quite right, all my life i thought he was George Deakes thats the name he was brought up with, stepfathers name, but in fact he was born George Hughes, and I have looked under Hughes as well. I didnt think that a marriage would be on his papers like that if it wasnt a army marriage. the trouble is his wife was a widow, and I dont know if she was british or simply married someone who was. Hales doesnt sound maltese to me.

wrong death then , the age did tie up with birth year and where he was born .
