I think ROL whatever must be Robert William Pithers and the Knee is likely Rose Giles or Harry Joseph Giles.

Thanks for the tip! That's nifty.

Looks like its been done by computer scanning, like the Britsh phone books, they can be a laugh to read as well.

I find it interesting on the older rolls it gives whether the house is freehold

Joy, just looked it up....oooh errr missus, they've made a right pig's ear of that name!
They're showing a few odd names for some of my lot - and I've only looked up about 20 so far!! :-0

I found my grandfather with the page number in the middle of his name.

I also found a page where the rent the occupants were paying was listed.

"Joy, just looked it up....oooh errr missus, they've made a right pig's ear of that name!"

- I was lucky I knew where he and his family were, and there were very few with that surname anyway ;-)

There are some with the name of the road as the first name.

Still, I consider myself very lucky to be able to see so many of my family, and more puzzles have been solved - some of which led to further questions :-)

I love ancestry :-)

Had one today call "And Save As".

Also don't expect much from the Australian Electoral Rolls on ancestry either. They are not complete and they have somehow indexed entire districts for 1958 as 1980. I have an ancestor that miraculously rose from the dead after 20 years and appeared on the 1980 roll until I realised their stuff up. Only way to work out it was the wrong roll was to go to the very first page in the "A" section where it actually says 1958 Electoral Roll.

The same site is doing a count down to the release of the US 1940 census - they'll probably make a pigs ear of that as well in their haste to release it on the site :-(
