1). Building your family tree - I did to begin with, but have found that I don't get any contacts as my surname is unusual. I tend to be the one with the info. I don't use it now or update it.

2). Message centre - mainly for receiving messages

3). Searching records - you've got to be joking. What a waste of time that is.

4). Community area
Boards Summary – never
Announcements – never
Success Stories – very occasionally
General Chat – never
Quizzes & Games – never, but I agree it keeps them off the other boards
Genealogy Chat – almost every day
Find Ancestors – almost every day
Find Living Relatives – never
Suggestions – never, but I might give it a go now that I've read other peoples comments.
Blogs – not interested

5). Searching trees - occasionally, mainly just checking contacts which was successful to begin with. Now I rarely get a new contact for my tree.

6). Hot Matches - I was assiduous when they first started, trawling through the lists even though most people weren't even born in the same country. Now they're a total waste of time.

Update: I didn't realize this was a one day poll. The people on the other side of the world are so often forgotten. Poor us!

As a relative newcomer I advise as follows

1. After 3 months decided to buy FTM and find it much better
so now given up on GR
2. Hardly ever
3. 1911 census
4 Most of the time. The help and encouragement i have received has kept me going. I read most of the posts to find things that will help me. If people want general chat and games why not -
5 A few times
6 Had little success with this.

What it boils down to is that I have paid £51 for 6 months membership and consider it money down the drain.

I felt compelled to write this after reading Rollothered's composition. All I can say is thank goodness for the rest of you who regularly post items at least you make it interesting and fun. Keep it up

1). Building your family tree = not so much now I use FTM
2). Message centre = contacting connected family occaisionally
3). Searching records = no I use Ancestry
4). Community area = most of all on General
5). Searching trees = occaisionally
6). Hot Matches = never now too many mismatches and haven't received any for a very long time

Which is why I put this in the suggestions board, Maureen

(twice - it disappeared after a while)

GlitterBaby Report 16 Nov 2011 22:42

So how many of the 12 million members (apparently) will have had a chance to take part

Shot themselves in the foot again Lol

Curiouser and curiouser, as Alice once said ... ;-)

Thanks Joy

Strange no mention of it being one day only on this site. If that is the case then why has the thread not been closed.

So once again FB before this site

Joy

Joy Report 16 Nov 2011 22:15

It had been, Maureen; on facebook, when I posted that the sticky had gone, I was told that it had been a one day poll.

GlitterBaby

GlitterBaby Report 16 Nov 2011 21:41

Actually surprised that this thread has not been stickied

Are GR hoping it will vanish down the boards and be forgotten

2). Message centre - yes, keeping in contact with friends and helping others with research.
Currently, and for the past several days, no notifications received of new messages.

4). Community area - yes.

5). Searching trees - occasionally.

1). Building your family tree - no. I had input names of some direct ancestors but removed them recently.
I keep a family tree on my computer.

6). Hot Matches - no.

3). Searching records - no. Before records were in genes reunited I searched other sites and still do so.

One wonders what are your plans, GR, re: the results of this poll?

If, for instance, everyone is agreed that Quizzes & Games does not belong on a Genealogical site, are you going to get rid of it? I think not.

Most agree that Search Records leaves a lot to be desired. Get rid of that? Of course not, that's where you make money.

So what are your plans, GR?

Is this just another exercise in futility?

1. Yes. This was my first venture into tree building and I enjoy it. I do have another online tree elsewhere as well as an offline version.

2. Yes. This is essential to me in the way I help on the boards.

3. Never.

4. Constantly. Friendship par excellence!

General Chat - very occasionally.

Quizzes and Games - not interested.

Genealogy Chat - yes, in order to help new folk find their replies.

Find Ancestors - yes, in order to help new folk find their replies.

Find Living Relatives - very occasionally.

Suggestions - yes, to keep up to date.

Searching Trees - a very useful tool especially for anyone wanting to find family connections. Especially useful for the FLR board enquiries.

Hot Matches - very rarely.

I don't think the majority of the millions of members on this site realise the value of the Community boards. It would be good to see the boards given a more prominent and easy to read postition on the Home Page.

I use Genealogy Chat the most.
Hot matches need to be brought back in their old format as you can easily delete those that are not relevant.
Games and Quizzes do not really belong on this site
The old format for this site in general was much better should never have been changed when there was a change of ownership
Hope this helps

I am continuing to build my tree on this site. I therefore also use Tree Search and Find Ancestors as well as Geneology Chat.
When I joined there were no Records on here so I use other sites and never bother with these especially when some of the paid Records on this site are available for free elsewhere.
Have always used Message Centre and occasionaly when bored with my Tree I use the Quizzes and Games.
In the early days Hot Matches was helpful but with a large tree I find them more a nuisance than a help.

1). Building your family tree
not very often, have the bare bones here, that's all I want

2). Message centre
yes, for helping other members and talking to people I know

3). Searching records
never, horrible site for records, inefficient search function, no ability to correct mistakes, impossible to find things if there are errors in transcriptions, unwieldy access to images, too expensive for the product

4). Community area
often, for helping other members, sometimes asked for help with finding something in the past
but the 'chat' boards no, they have their own groups who come here to visit with one another, I posted a 'game or puzzle' once and was studiously ignored :-)

5). Searching trees
yes, for helping other members on the find ancestors boards, sometimes for people in my own tree ... in the past I did my tree searches and did find several people I didn't know with shared ancestors some quite recent , and when I persisted with searches every once in a while in the hope of finding a couple of lost branches I did finally succeed when someone new joined and had knowledge of my mystery people, so that has been a very useful and successful function

6). Hot Matches
I check them but with the old system they were useless, now there aren't any, people I match with are those I already know, but I did find them originally by searching trees here

I would say only 2 and 4 but do use 5 when trying to help someone find a contact.

To all you free members can you reply to this?

CuriousFish Report 15 Nov 2011 20:33

1). Building your family tree... Find this hard to manage and making changes can be a nighmare
2). Message centre... occasionally helpful
3). Searching records... too costly for what you get, cannot look at previous or next page on census. Other sites do it much better
4). Community area don't use it Games etc are watse of time, and as to the chat, there are plenty of other sites to do just that.
5). Searching trees... never use it
6). Hot Matches havne't had any hits for months, need overhauling, and not mush good as some memebrs do ot even bothe to answer. Not much point in having it.

On no please not another survey, what will it prove.?

If the site doesn't work properly then none of the above can be used.
