Have you tried looking for surname variations for spelling and pronunciation?

A valuable lesson I learned years ago about surnames came from a talk in Birmingham from a gentleman linked to the Spode family. If I remember rightly he had a missing branch that refused to be found. I wish I could remember exactly but I think he was up Newcastle way and somehow found the family or realised what had happened. This member of the elusive branch had headed to north-east England. And somewhere along the line Spode had been translated to Spoward and written as it sounded ie Spode but with a Geordie accent. So wait until you are by yourself and no one in your house can think you have gone loopy and try out the names you are looking for in the various accents of this great country.

Got my grandads birth certificate, but it didn't help, I still can't find him in any of the census' (well actually he would only be in the 1911) and can't find his parents together in any of them either, because they should be in the 1911.
Can't find marriage cert. of them either, any where in the country!! LOL
What to do now? Do I try and get a marriage cert for his mum and Dad. I have found her, or what I think is her, in the 1881/1891 with her Mum, Dad, brothers and sisters.
George Saunders 1907, of Tylers Green, chepping wycombe, then his Dad, John Saunders, unknown dob, and Elizabeth Elstone, dob unknown (for sure).
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Just don't know where John was born, or where they both went/married etc, but my grandad is registered and lived in Penn/Tylers Green. He was disowned for marrying my nan, so we don't know anything about them!
