hello

after watching heir hunters i wondered how it is you find descendants.

they make it look so easy!

want to try and find descendants of my grandads siblings.

thanks :-S

Flick Report 31 Aug 2011 14:35

Find their marriages............look for births with the relevant surnames.

OR............look for their deaths (assuming they aren't alive for you to just ask them) , and get the certs to see whether a child registered the event

I do wish that the people who broadcast these programmes would make it clear that their research is far from easy.....and that it COSTS MONEY. That's why they are so keen to sign up the beneficiaries - to recoup their outlay, and make a profit.

I agree, these programmes make it look so easy - and no mention of the costs involved!!!

If this makes any sense - you've got to go up the tree, to be able to come down (the branches).
So, going back to your grandad's parents....look for births from their marriage to establish all your grandad's siblings.
Then look for the siblings' marriages, and then look for births (of their children).

If any of the families were around in 1911 then the task would be a whole lot easier by finding a complete (more or less) family on the 1911 census, but you didn't say what sort of year/s you are searching.
The task would also be easier if you are after the London area, as 'Ancestry' now has a lot of the LMA bmd's online, up til 1921 for marriages :-)

Jonesey Report 1 Sep 2011 18:34

Last nights edition of WDYTYA involving Larry Lamb was probably one of the most realistic that I have seen. It encompassed a lot of those elements that GR members encounter on a regular basis. Adoption, people disappearing without a trace, name changes, 2nd/3rd marriages, false information, emigration ect.

Although it probably took a small army of researchers to piece it all together the programme at least explained the sources that the information was derived from. Sources which are readily available to family historians/genealogists. It also brought to peoples attention two places which might be helpful to those whose families may have included travelling show people amongst their ancestors.

Of course it would be nice to be able to jet off to some exotic location, to be met by archivists who had researched what our ancestors had been up to in their new chosen location and introduce us to their descendants but no hard feelings. How wonderful for an 84 year old lady to see pictures of her birth parents for the first time and to discover that she had a half brother when believing all her life that she was an only child.

Henry Turner age 47 born middlesex st pancras labourer
Ada F Turner age 37
Jane E age 20 (this has been crossed out)

Walter J 12
Rose E 7
Ada E or T? 6
George W 3
joey or george possibly cannot read it age 2
Annie L Turner 3 and half months this is also crossed out?

says they had 12 children 7 survived and 5 have died.

living at 32 Tovey place (think thats what it says) kentish town.

at the bottom of the page it says there are 8 people living in the house

where and how would be the best place to find more information etc.

also if i can find the children that died that may be able to help me with places they lived etc?

thanks for all your help and comments :-)

Maddie Report 6 Sep 2011 16:21

previous census may have additional children shown
if not on 1911 you can then look for death dates
it is harder if they are born and die between census

thanks very much for your reply

think Fred is more of a likely name then Trey but cant really read it my great grandad had some strange writing,

Have looked for them before in 1901 without much luck, i found Ernest like you and thought this was possibly right.
How do i find out if the rest of the family was in the workhouse in 1901?

need to find names/dates etc before i even try and find there descendants

:-) thanks

KempinaPartyhat Report 6 Sep 2011 17:47

Sometime you have to backwards and forwards to find them ...so try finding them on the 1891 census as they should !!! be together as a couple henry and ada!! That may lead you to them in 1901....
