Maria Report 21 Aug 2011 19:36

I am trying to confirm the birth of Lewis Lomas in 1837 in Kilrush Ireland. I would like to know if he was born there due to may be a forces hospital there or try to find out what he/his family were doing there at the time.

This is the furthest date I have managed to get back to in the Lomas family.

Please can anyone advise - TIA.

The only other information I have is that he married Annie Bryan in 1859 in London.
Thanks

Maria Report 21 Aug 2011 20:22

In 1861 Lewis and his family were living in Hackney London - so this could mean that his father may have remained in County Clare whilst he moved to London.

Samuel Lomas - I have a note from my mum that he may have served with Nelson on The Victory so this seems to tie in with the information that you have provided.

If Samuel was married in Ireland - please can you advise how I would find out the name of his spouse?

Thank you.

Christina(Lancashire) Report 21 Aug 2011 20:36

Are you sure he married Annie Bryan?

There is a marriage on the London, England, Marriages and Banns, 1754-1921, on Ancestry, for Lewis Lomas to Ann Dunford, in Marylebone in 1859.

If he is yours, his father's name and occupation may be given.

I don't have access to view the full details.

Found a newspaper obitury and it states;

" Lomas- On the 22nd inst, at Kilrush, Co Clare, Ireland Mr Samuel Lomas aged 68"

That's from;

Births, Deaths, Marriages and Obituaries .
The Morning Post (London, England), Wednesday, October 27, 1858; pg. 8; Issue 26476. 19th Century British Library Newspapers: Part II.

Category: Birth, death, marriage notices.

Sadly at the moment Cpo Clare do not have their parish records available on-line, however you can contact them at;

[email protected]

It states "Co. Clare offers a commissioned research service only.".

Thanks for the above Dee..gives me a little more to go with...
Would imagine the Harriet who married Charles Lennox Stewart (1846) Kilrush is connected..
Maria does the above sound familiar at all....?

Hope you can find more info Eringobragh1916, you'd think that knowing the names of Lewis's parents would lead to a marriage.. no luck!! And I'm sure that William Powis's father was William........ no luck there with a marriage either.... so we're still minus a maiden name for the ladies at the mo.

Eringobragh1916 Report 22 Aug 2011 09:12

The further back you get the variations on the surname (as transcribed) can come up as Lomax/Lummax/Lumas etc...
That being said I cant find his death Reg either...!!

Maria...Samuel is buried in Kilrush C of I Graveyard Grace St......It is also the Place of the "Vandeleur Family" Vault (who Samuel leased his property from)..The graveyard is unfortunately in a dreadful state although the Church was "restored" a couple years ago it is not used as a church.

113 LOMAS Erected by Frances Lomas in memory of her beloved husband Samuel Lomas who died 23 October 1858 (Location: Could be no 113)

Have not so far found anything relative to a Will etc...but at least you know he's buried here in the Co Clare

This also maybe of interest;

1858
Death
At Cappa Lodge, Kilrush, Mr. Samuel Lomas, former proprietor of the Vandeleur Arms Hotel.

This is possibly were the occupation of Lewis ties in.

When such records are found pre civil registration in Ireland (ie 1864 for births), please would you give the website where you found them? Many thanks :)
