So, if there's no father named, she didn't marry.........

When was her son born?

What was her exact name on the birth cert?

And was her occupation recorded?

Suzanne

Suzanne Report 18 Jul 2011 22:55

Flick

Flick Report 18 Jul 2011 23:03

Ella is also a name in its own right................

The shortened version Isabel(la) is usually Bella

Flick

Flick Report 18 Jul 2011 23:06

Are you assuming that because the son was born in the Liverpool area, his mother was also born there?

She could have gone to Liverpool just for the birth............

Is there an address on the birth cert?

Suzanne

Suzanne Report 18 Jul 2011 23:16

hi flick.
no im not assuming that my g grandmother was born in liverpool,in 2001 i went with my husband to the highlands of scotland for 2wks to research an ella macdonald born 1898 in a place called archiestown.she came to liverpool with her parents sometime before the 1901 census.we searched and searched and couldnt come up with any positive information about her.
the above marriage cert ive got.ella macdonald was a widow age 30 when she married thomas brookes in 1916.i really have searched everywhere for the elusive ella macdonald, ive even tried swapping the macdonald for mcdonald but to no avail.thank you for all of your help tonight.x

Suzanne

Suzanne Report 18 Jul 2011 23:23

to answer your question about address(i think we are crossing one another with the typing)granddad was born in 17 beaconfield st toxteth park.his mother was a domestic/housemaid. ive had a search done on the house and other things by the liverpool records office and they came up with nothing.house was a normal house owned by a miss brown i think.
grandad was born on the 21st feb and not the 27th like i said in my post(my brother wasborn on the 27th feb andi alwaysget them mixed up sorry.)

Re Flick's 1911:

I would imagine Stornsway is meant to be Stornaway.
It is the main town on the Island of Lewis and Harris, lying in the Lewis (Ross) part.

I would imagine Urrah is Urray - it is a 30m long parish now, running from Beauly Firth (which extends E from Inverness) just N of Beauly.
The parish runs along the boundary of Invernessshire, almost across Scotland.
The boundaries of the parish were altered in 1891, with a swap of small cross-border portions with Kilmorack parish in Inverness;
a detached portion of Urray was transferred to Contin parish (the neighbouring parish to the N);
a detached portion of Urray was united with the main portion by transferring the intervening land from Contin parish,

My guess is that David would use the 1861 boundaries for his pob, if he did happen to live in one of the affected portions of the parish, but he most likely lived in the main portion.
My dad had an uncle who was similarly affected by boundary changes, and I, myself, usually claim to have lived in non-existant county of Middlesex.

Marriages Dec 1891 (>99%)
Beck Martha Jane W. Derby 8b 955
Macdonald David W. Derby 8b 955
Macleon Barbara W. Derby 8b 955
Stewart James Alexander S W. Derby 8b 955
[The blurry image does appear to say Macleon, but the local index gives the much more likely Lewis surname of Macleod]

Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1891
Surname Forename(s) Surname Forename(s) Church / Register Office Registers At Reference
MACDONALD David MACLEOD Barbara West Derby, Register Office or Registrar Attended Liverpool REG_WD/134/109

Pity they didn't marry in Scotland - the m.cert would then have been much more helpful.
