Yesterday I recieved some info from a family researcher who has a family bible. I spent a couple of hours checking the info & inputting it on my Ancestry tree but didn´t have time to finish,intending to go back to it today.
This morning I recieved a message from someone who is doing a 1 name study into one of the surnames I had input, basically telling me that I wasn´t doing it as he would like it & telling me to go back through my tree & make amendments to place names etc because he prefers the Victorian spellings.
I wrote back & said that my tree was for my use & while I have no objection to other people using the info I would expect them to check it before adding it to their trees & that I would manage my tree as I choose.
Got another message this morning more or less instructing me to go back through my tree & amend all the enrtries for Birmingham from B´ham.
I´m afraid I was a bit curt in my reply, especially as,as far as I can see, he has no connection with my family & the name he has picked up on is the maiden name of one of my ancestors wives
Do you think Ancestry have started employing people to police the trees looking for spelling mistakes & typo´s?

I'm afraid I'd tell him that it was my tree and I'll enter the information in whatever way I choose. It's up to him whether he wants to use it or not and, if the way some of it is entered offends him, then he can do his own research and enter it as he wishes.
In other words, put up or shut up.

Sounds like a nutter to me (spoken in my professional nurse capacity). Obviously suffering from a severe case of nerd syndrome.

I see it has you do, what you put on your tree is your own business. You can put completely wrong info (sorry, information!!) and spell everything as you please if that is your inclination. Nobody has to look do they!

As a Brummie, I am happy with Birmingham or B'ham. If he likes things olde worlde why not wind him up by using the traditional Brummagem?! Or better still go native and abbreviate to Brum?

Well you can always adjust the privacy setting so he cant see what you have put !

Jan. As an ex Brummie myself, I usually refer to it as Brum, though not on my tree obviously.
To be honest, he has no intention of accepting that anyone except him is right.
I´ve always been happy to swap info with other people & always check everything as I would expect others to do, but really I never comment on peoples spellings of names, places etc. If I think they are wrong, I input it as I want it.

My feelings exactly. If he wants to copy my research, fair enough, but he either accepts what I have put or amends it himself.

I have reported him to Ancestry because I found the tone of his messages unpleasant to say the least.
Have every intention of blocking him, but am just waiting to see if he comes back to me after my query as to whether he is employed by Ancestry to police the trees.

Would really pee me off to get someone like that dictating,cos that is what he is doing, Sounds a real jobsworth,
What authority does he have to police peoples trees and then treat them like naughty schoolkids.That sort really gets my hackles up and I.m afraid I would tell him to s.d orf !! :-P

I have to aggree with all yor replies He has nothing else to do with his sad little life but to pick on others I would say do your tree as you think fit no one has to look at it if they don't want to it's YOUR TREE TO DO AS YOU THINK FIT

Am I missing something here? Surely you have to specifically grant a person access to your tree before they can see such details as the spelling of place names. Or is there some way I don't know about for someone I've never had contact with to leech all the goodies from my tree?
In the first case, just accept that there are some right wally's about, remove his access to your tree and move on.
In the second case, I'd get really worried and report it to GR as a privacy issue or hacking.

just a little aside

I found that when importing a gedcom into family tree maker
there were many place names that were highlighted as errors and unknown places. when I fixed the SPELLING as the program required, the reports all printed out effortlessly.

Could it be that this chap, wants to import your info and then print it out; but is too lazy to do the fixing himself; that the program requires?
thats if he IS using FTM.

As far as I´m aware, public trees on Ancestry can be viewed by any members. I don´t have to give specific permission.
I like to keep my tree public as I tend to get more response from researchers following my family. I´m perfectly happy for them to extract info, but what they see is what they get. If they want it differently it´s up to them to amend it.
I´m equally happy for others to advise me if my info is wrong, so that I can check and amend it where necessary.
As I have never had problems with spelling in my life (well, not often) I object to his attitude. How would he react to someome who genuinely does have problems. Is he implying that their info is inferior.?
Have had a reply from Ancestry saying that I need to refer the complaint to a different section.
Would have thought they could just pass it on. It went to Customer services because the report abuse button wasn´t working.

Nobody has the right to tell you how to enter the information on your tree. I tend to enter it as it appears on the census which also contains abbreviations.

It is also up to him to enter information into his tree as he sees fit. I think I would say I prefer my way so perhaps it is he that should be amending the entries to my way to keep the equilibrium.

No idea if he is a member of GOONS. He just said he was doing a one name study into the surname I entered.!!
Can´t see that he has a tree on Ancestry unless it´s a private one so that no one can criticise it.

That puzzled me a bit. Even if he doesn´t like modern spellings, how does he cope with pre Victorian ones?
