Thank you lancashireAnn. Always good to hear from someone from my home county! I now have so many useful sites as a result of my request. Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. Best wishes from Lynn

lancashireAnn Report 9 Jun 2011 22:44

did you know of the lancashire sites which can be v useful?

lan-opc.org.uk (in this case not particularly useful)

and

lancashirebmd.org.uk

which gives Mary Ellen's birth showing mmn = Lowe

Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1882
Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference
ARROWSMITH Mary Ellen Culcheth Wigan & Leigh LOWE CUL/36/261

which then lets you find on freebmd.org.uk

Marriages Mar 1881 (>99%)
ARROWSMITH Samuel Leigh 8c 191
Lowe Nancy Leigh 8c 191

all the above sites are free to use

Just kidding jax. For reasons of coincidence, although I've only been a member since April, poor Andy seems to have been on the Board whenever I've had a query. I suggested to him that I was probably going to have to put him on my payroll!
p.s ALL help is appreciated.

I dont think anyone is trying to get rid of your incessant requests for searches! as you put it.

Not that I helped on this one but if no one asked for help I would cancel my subs altogether

Thanks for that information jax and Andy who I suspect is trying to get rid of my incessant requests for searches! Will investigate.

Lynn

You can just change your subscription to standard member, which I think you will find that most of the people that help on the boards are.

Thanks for that Colin. I guess it's worth joining another site in addition to Genes in order to obtain a better search facility. On the other hand, I've had such wonderful service from the ever so helpful folks on this site!!!!!

Lyho47

Lyho47 Report 9 Jun 2011 20:58

I can accept that this was a particularly unusual search due to the creative reworking of the surname for which you and Colin should be presented with Super Sleuth awards, but I've found that some straightforward searches just aren't available on the Genes site which is the only one I'm a member of.

Lyho47 Report 9 Jun 2011 20:52

Note for Andy. If you're sending amendments (to where, I know not!) the place of birth Is Glazebury, not Glasbury. Cheerio for now, Lynn

Hi Lynn

Do seem to be getting in on a few of your searches!

If you view the image you can see where the different versions come from. Colin has posted the same family.

Usually when families can't be found on the census records, its because the surname is wrong. In these cases I'll just use forenames. Sometimes gets a long list to search through, but at least it was under 'A' this time.

Could you please ask for look ups on the find ancestors board in future.

If you would like to read the post at the top of the page which explains

Blimey, you people are so quick, I can't type my thank you replies up quick enough. Flippin' eck indeed Andy-where did that name come from!? No wonder I found nothing. The question is, how on earth did you?? You are fast becoming my personal searcher, perhaps I should just address my queries to you directly on the message boards. Seriously though, once again thank you very much.
Now to Colin. You have produced a recognisable English surname and it seems to be the right family but wrong name. What's it all about? There must be an explanation.Presumably you and Andy have viewed two different sites. Could it just be appalling handwriting on the part of the census recorder? Many thanks Colin.
