Hi, currently in contact with the Shetland Archive Office who have always been very helpful with any requests for help.
On our last visit to the Shetlands about 4 years ago we can remember the Horizontal rain. When we got back to our apartment one day after being caught in a "shower" one half of our bodies were completely soaked the other side bone dry !!! The suede shoes I were wearing were the funniest.!!!

Have you contacted the Museum in Scalloway?

http://shetlopedia.com/Scalloway_Museum

They are quite near the hotel as I seem to remember. (Visited Scalloway a couple of years ago. A memorable holiday where I encountered at least 50 types of rain I'd never encountered before)

We have no idea at present whether Mr Castle was a new owner or lessee of the hotel. Our next step is to find out when the ownership of the hotel changed hands.

Hi, thanks to everyone who showed interest and helped out on this one.I now have a printout of the hotel on the 1911 census.
Census 1911 010/01 005/00 007.(P Castle...Hotel Keeper Age 43 )

Dennis Report 12 Apr 2011 19:46

It certainly is. What I would really love to know is who actually bought the hotel from my grandad?
He had joined the Cameron Highlanders about 1895, and his mother and the other 2 boys had moved down to Gosport by 1901.
Interesting isn't it?

Hi Eringobragh,

Lol :-)) Yes I have the same problem sometimes!

I hope we find out what happened after the fire.... it's quite a sad story really isn't it?

Hi,

I've taken over the chair from my husband - it's getting too much for him!
My granddad leased the Scalloway Hotel to Charles Lennie and in 1895 he took court action to recover non-payment of rent. (I have the paperwork on this). I wasn't aware that the hotel had been burnt down - insurance job??
The hotel had been built by Charles Aitken for my great-grandad.

I think it possibly was still unoccupied in 1911 after the fire Dennis?
It certainly seems to have had some bad luck doesn't it?

I think I remember trying to help your wife before about her G Grandad but it was some time ago. I'll keep trying to find the hotel in the 1911 census but I find the advanced search really difficult and can't seem to get to grips with it!

Cheers,

Cathy

Charles Lennie
Shetlopedia - The Shetland Encyclopaedia
Jump to: navigation, search

Scalloway Hotel's staff, there is a good chance that Lennie is in this picture and is possibly the man below the 'A' in ScallowayCharles Lennie (b. 1860, Ophir, Orkney, d. 27 June 1909, Scalloway Hotel) was a builder, hotel owner and County Councillor for Burra from February 1898 until his death in June 1909.

When he was 20, he emigrated to Canada to work as a builder. He worked between there and Texas, before eventually returning home to Kirkwall where he stayed for 5 years. When he moved to Shetland he became the owner of the Scalloway Hotel. Unfortunately the hotel and his residence within it was ravaged with fire in 1908, and although this was covered by insurance, he lost all his possessions and the event contributed to his ailing health.

He was a member of the Gordon Highlanders, and he also presented the "Lennie Cup" to the winner of an annual shooting competition.

a big thankyou to you Cathy for searching for me or should i say my wife who i am doing this bit of research for .Her GreatGrand Father Donald Mcinnes was the first owner of the hotel which he had built in 1885.
It was leased to Charles Lennie who died in 1909,which leads us to the question who was in the hotel in 1911.
Someone earlier thought they had seen the name Innes above the hotel but the only name we have ever seen was that of Charles Lennie in a photo c.1900
P.S you obviously type much faster than me!!!!! just seen your latest...thanks

I have just found the photo at

http://shetlopedia.com/images/7/76/Scalloway_Hotel_1900_-_Shetland_Museum_and_Archives_Y00011.jpg

and it's definately Charles Lennie's name above the door and I would assume him and his wife are in the photo with the staff. Quite a nice photo.... but then I love old photos!

Just found the Lennie family on the 1911 census back home in Kirkwall Orkney by doing a free search. Charles senior is not there though but Andrina, Charles Jr and Ida are on there.... but I'm wondering where the Innis name came into this???

Edit: Charles Sr died in Shetland in 1909 according to scotlandspeople.

The Shetland Library is here in Lerwick and the tel no is 01595 743868 or email www.shetland-library.gov.uk.
The address for the Family History Society is 6, Hillhead, Lerwick, Shetland, ZE1 0ES and I'm sure they'd be glad to help you if they can.

I've been trying myself to find the hotel on the 1911 census for you but haven't had any luck yet.
