I recall seeing a similar query somewhere else recently and the conclusion seemed to point to Folieburn being Fala Dam Burn, which can be seen on decent maps.

Sounds fair Denis.

Thanks Kay - I don't know though they appear on all the censuses as John and Cecilia and listed as parent's to said children as well.

Another one to ask about at WDYTYA next weekend I guess.

Thanks to all for your help.

:) Have a good weekend

I would have thought Falaburn/Fala Burn is a strong possibility?

What's a fancy nitter could it be a lace knitter instead?

Sorry everyone

I kept loosing the internet yesterday and have had problems again today.

Potty
If you could contact them potty that would be grand. Thank you.

Thanks mgnv - I'll check out the site and thanks for the info.

Helen thanks for that I realise now that the census I have at home that I could not read is the the 1851 one you found so thanks again.

I also came across a note I have that John & Cecilia had a sone James born around 1837 - I'm not sure where I picked this up from but then I vaigley remember my gran telling me a fair bit of the family history and it may be from that.

Having said that maybe that's where margaret comes in? What do you all think?

Thanks again
Gypsyjoe

Like Potty, I can't find a Folieburn - sounds like a farm name from a parish register.

In the 16th cent, the ELN parish of Soutra was annexed by the MLN parish of Fala, to create the cross border parish of Fala & Soutra.
In 1891, county boundary changes put the (combined) parish in MLN.

There's pics of Fala (abt 20km SE of Edinburgh) here:

Thru 1929, a register office marr was a religious ceremony of a C of S flavour. If you didn't like that, an irregular marr was your best alternative. In the 1920s, abt 13% of marrs were irregular - I don't know if that's actual marrs or registered ones. By law, one of the couple was responsible for registering an irregular marr - I think the penalty for not doing so was a fine up to 5s.

Joe is it OK for me to give the tree owner your email address and ask him to contact you that way?

GypsyJoe

GypsyJoe Report 15 Feb 2011 12:59

Certainly makes sense potty. Thanks for the images by the way. I've had internet problems today not connection here at work, finaaly up and running so here I am.

Looks like another mystery for my tree or not, I've now just seen page two of the thread. If you could contact them potty that would be grand. Thank you.

I just found out that a term I've been using for people Numpty is actually a Scottish term and been around for ever how strange is that?

The census is from freecen Potty.

I don't have access to Ancestry so usually have a look into freecen which sometimes comes up trumps.

They also note on their 1841 census details whether the person was born in the county or not which can be helpful. Don't think this info is available on Ancestry.

In the case of the Buchanan family, the 1841 census correctly states they were not born in the county.

Thought I would have a look for the grandson, Robert Martin and found this marriage:

Bride's Marital Status:
Bride's Previous Husband's Name:
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: M11990-1

The tree I mentioned earlier on Ancestry has another daughter, Catherine, whose marriage is given as:

Date
29MAY1843
Location
PARISH CHURCH OF ST CUTHBERTS
to GEORGE MARTIN
Description
ADDRESSES GIVEN AS 162 FOUNTAIN BRIDGE MARRIED BY REVEREND DR JAMES PEDDIE ONE OF THE MINDERS OF THE UNITED ASSOCIATE SECESSION CONGREGATION BRISTO ST HER FATHER STATED AS JOHN BUCHANAN LATER GARDENER?

The address is the same as John & Cecilia's in 1841 and this couple had a daughter, Cecilia Pride Martin, b1862, Edinburgh.

Joe, I know you don't have Ancestry so would you like me to contact the owner of this tree (which seems to be well sourced)? The tree owner is descended from Catherine.

Potty Report 15 Feb 2011 11:07

Well done, Helen. Is that 1851 from freecen? I think it must be missed off of Ancestry - can't find it there even doing an Address search!

I can't find a Folieburn anywhere in Scotland - possible the name of a farm or house?

Neither can I find any of the family (except Ann) in 1851.

I wondered about the Margaret in the 1861 - possibly a daughter-in-law but there don't seem to have been any sons! I would think John is her son, not Cecilia's.

GypsyJoe

GypsyJoe Report 14 Feb 2011 14:40

Thanks Helen and Potty

I guess since my family seems to have been so religious irregular marriages wasn't something I considered.

Helen do you know if Fala or Folieburn are one and the same?

I'm wondering if the 1861 census one is the correct family since Margaret appears to have been born around the same time as Ann. Is it possible for someone to to please check a 1851 census please - I've used all my credits for this month and will now have to wait till payday to do more.

Did you find Cecilia's family on family search?

From Scotlandspeople:

Irregular Marriages
Bear in mind that 'irregular' marriages, by exchange of promises before witnesses, by betrothal and consummation, or by cohabitation and repute, were forms of marriage recognised by Scots Law, yet may have taken place without any official record of the event.
