Just a quickie really.

I'm having a problem finding certain scottish family members as far as BMD's on the scotlands people website does this mean that those one's I can't find weren't registered or didn't get married?

Having said that I have found a few births on the family search site but not on the scottish one.

confused and have a headache coming on.

Please can someone clear this up for me.

Thanks
Gypsyjoe

It depends on the years you are searching,,before 1855 it will be under OPR but it depends on the religion aswell.

Too much information entered can produce no results.

What dates are you looking for and names?

Karen

Karen Report 12 Feb 2011 15:58

Female deaths are usually indexed under their maiden name although I have found exceptions to this. Also some given names are interchangeable for example Christian/Christine Janet/Jessie and therefore could be indexed in the alternative name also Mc and Mac names are commonly recorded incorrectly.

Hi Ann

the list is long I'm affraid, I can always give a couple if it's not too much trouble for anyone.

John Buchanan is supposed to have married Ceilia Pryde (both her first and last names seem to vary in spelling I've noticed.) I know the names because of their daughter Annie's marriage but I'm also not able to find her birth. Annie the daughter seems to have got married and died both I have found records for but she hasn't been born it would appear. I've even found the family on censuses.

John the father I'm guessing was born around 1810 give or take as was Ceilia - though that's just a guess in relation to the census. I'm starting to think that Ceilia may not have been her real name only a name she went by thus the reason I've not found her or them.

Ann appears to have been born around 1833 in a place called Folieburn, in Midlothian, Scotland - then again I may be looking in the wrong area for her since I've been searching midlothian. She was married in 1855 and died in 1892

The following is where I have tracked Ann so far...
1871 living at 5 Rosebank Sq, Portobello. (House keeper)
1855 living at brickwork close, Leith (Servant)
1851 living at 14 High St, Portobello. (general Servant)

This is a start and thank you. I'm about finished here at work so am off home where unfortunatly I don't have the internet. So I will have to check back in on Monday when I get to work.

If anyone can point me in another direction with these searches it would be much appreciated. I know everyone likes helping out and I do appreciate you all for doing this but I feel a but like I'm taking advantage of all your generosity.

I can never thank any of you all that help me out enough. I could always shout everyone dinner if I ever win lotto.

Have a good weekend all.

There are trees on Ancestry that have John and Cecelia on. They have her born 1791. There is this entry on familysearch:

CICILIA PRIDE Pedigree
Birth: 22 NOV 1791

Christening: 03 DEC 1791 Pencaitland, East Lothian, Scotland
Father: WILLIAM PRIDE Family
Mother: KATHARINE PENMAN

The same info brings up a result on scotlandspeople

Potty

Potty Report 12 Feb 2011 17:44

The same tree has John's death as 6th Jan 1863 in Leith. There are several possibles on scotlandspeople - his death cert should give you his parents' names. There are a few possible births and baptisms on familysearch for Callender.

No luck with a marriage for John and Cecilia - may have been an "irregular one" - Google to see what they were!

Thanks everyone good work.

Ann did marry Samual Hay I decend from them.

So the info everyone found has that been from Ancestry instead?

Has anyone heard of Fala or Folieburn for that matter?

Potty how do we know if that Cecilia is the same one as mine? Lol love the coment about the supposed son in 1861! What do you mean by irregular marriage? I tried googling their names but didnn't come up with much except what we've put here in the forum.

Helen I too had come across the same entry.

Thanks again
Gypsyjoe

Helen

Helen Report 14 Feb 2011 12:28

The village of Fala is in Midlothian.

According to the 1861 census Potty sent, Cecilia gives her birthplace as Pencaitland. This matches in with the information sent for Cecilia's christening.

Cecilia's siblings ?

Father: William Pride,
Mother: Katherine Penman

There is a death on Scotlandspeople for:

Cecilia Pride / Buchanan (spelling as noted)
1869
County: Midlothian
District: Leith

Born: 1791 (+/- 2yrs)

Potty

Potty Report 14 Feb 2011 12:47

From Scotlandspeople:

Irregular Marriages
Bear in mind that 'irregular' marriages, by exchange of promises before witnesses, by betrothal and consummation, or by cohabitation and repute, were forms of marriage recognised by Scots Law, yet may have taken place without any official record of the event.

Thanks Helen and Potty

I guess since my family seems to have been so religious irregular marriages wasn't something I considered.

Helen do you know if Fala or Folieburn are one and the same?

I'm wondering if the 1861 census one is the correct family since Margaret appears to have been born around the same time as Ann. Is it possible for someone to to please check a 1851 census please - I've used all my credits for this month and will now have to wait till payday to do more.

Did you find Cecilia's family on family search?

Potty

Potty Report 14 Feb 2011 17:02

I can't find a Folieburn anywhere in Scotland - possible the name of a farm or house?

Neither can I find any of the family (except Ann) in 1851.

I wondered about the Margaret in the 1861 - possibly a daughter-in-law but there don't seem to have been any sons! I would think John is her son, not Cecilia's.
