Katie, thank you for the census finds! I had found the 1851 one but the Daniel instead of Samuel confused me. Could be very easy for the enumerator to mishear the name though. The rest ties in nicely. I think I'll find a birth cert for one of the younger children to double check the father's name.

Sylvia, thanks for the info too! It's becoming more likely that Elizabeth was born before the marriage - baptized a week after their marriage, conceived out of wedlock, scandal! :)

Sylvia, just seen your possible Eliza Slaughter marriage - sorry, I missed that when I replied earlier (hiding on page 2!). This looks very likely, I might get the cert and see if the witnesses give more clues too.

I got the info from the "new" family search site


www.familysearch.org/

Click on Advanced Search




If you're lucky, you'll find lots of info on there, but they don't have all aprishes by any means.



I'm still trying to work out whether all records on that "new" site are extracted, or whether there are some "submitted" records included as well.



so some care might be advised before adding the info willy nilly to your tree

Thanks very much! I've ordered Eliza's marriage certificate to see if the witnesses help confirm its here, and Maria's birth cert to check the father's name is Samuel not Daniel - hopefully will help confirm this is the right family on 1851.
