Hi everyone,
She was my paternal grandmother who married Henry James Buggs in (I think) 1901 in Woolwich London. I think she was born in 1885 Bethnal Green London. I found a Susan Colley in the 1891 census but can't find her anywhere else! She had lots of children and I have details of nine of these giving her maiden name as Colley. One of them however born in 1906 does not give Mother's maiden name? Help don't know where to go next.
Doreen.

Hi Tempest,
To be honest Iam very new to this and not really sure about anything on my Father's side! His Mum and Dad were just Nanny and Grandad to me. The name Susan Colley was on my father's birth certificate (Henry Edwin Buggs D.O.B. 23 jULY 1914 Fulham - died 16 July 1970 in Dorset). And as mentioned the name Colley is given as Mother's maiden name on all of his brothers and sisters I can account for except for Stanley George d.o.b. 1906 - could he have been born before they married? Am finding this very interesting but don't know my way around site too well and everything seems to take me ages! I have very few coherent elderly relatives left to ask as both parents deceased.
Any help/tips/advice appreciated.
Best regards
Doreen

Doreen, I have found the same one as you in 1891 but I don't think she is your Susan. Her father is William but on the marriage record found by Tempest her father is George. I think that this is your Susan's birth reg - after the 1891 census was taken,

Colley Susan Kensington 1a 122

Hi everyone,
Shirley you are right on my father's brothers and sisters - there were a set of twins who died young and possibly others as I think there wer 13/14 in all. I can't believe you all get info so quickly, is there a quick way around this site that I don't know about. Have to leave now but will digest all your comments and get back to you all a.s.a.p. What does Nurse Child mean?
What I remember of my paternal grandparents doesn't seem to amount to much but they did live at 63/65 Scrubbs Lane, Willesden NW10 (almost opposite the prison!!!)
Thank you so very much!
Best regards
Doreen

just googled it, it seems that a nurse child was a foster child

to quote what I found

"I'm sure there will be others who are able to give a more precise meaning but my understanding of the definition of 'Nurse child' is a child taken into the home of someone who cares for him/her as a result of circumstances that require the child's care away from his/her home.

I do not think that there would necessarily have been payment for the care of the child - the arrangement may well have been an 'informal' one."

Doreen, Births after 1911 have the mmn in the GRO ref so it's easy to search for them using the surname combination and the area. Its surprising though how many will come up with the surname combination but will be be different families. The area of birth is the clue but if all fails then buying the cert may be the only way.
On Ancestry there are London and Middlesex baptisms which are a help too.

If you think there were twins it's possible they were stillborn and therefore not listed on the birth index.

There's a 4 year gap between Evelyn and Ernest and a shorter gap between Stanley and Dorothy.

Hi everyone,
Tempest you gave precise details of the marriage between Henry James Buggs and Susan Colley which seem right to me now as I wasn't sure of the info I had given previously. Please tell me how you got the details because when I go into marriages all I get is one line of what was entered on the original record, i.e. Henry James Buggs m Colley.
Thanks
Doreen

Hi Doreen,

I found the record on Ancestry in the London, England, Marriages and Banns, 1754-1921 section which is in association with the London Metropolitan Archives.

Their Marriage cert is available to view online at ancestry

Henry was an art metal worker living at 5 Letchford Gardens, his father was also called Henry and was deceased and had been a liscensed vitualler

Susan was a machinist at the time of marriage and gave the same address as Henry, her father was listed as George Colley, a cabinet maker

witnesses were William Brown and Rosina A Brown
