At last i have found my grandmothers death , now to find her burial place any tips she died in 1942 aged 42

Try contacting the local council cemeteries office nearest to the place of death.

And if you don't have any luck there, find out where her parents might have been buried, she might be in a family grave (if you're lucky!)

In 1942 many churchyards may still have been used for burials, depending on where she lived.
Finding the nearest church to her home and checking burial records might be another option

I love graves, got some of my most useful info from them that I wouldn't otherwise have known.

Some councils charge for a search, the two containing most of my rellies do not and have been stars.

Some councils have their grave records online - Manchester cemeteries have a lot, I think there's a small fee to pay to access the details.

Many churches no longer hold their own records but you can find them in archives etc. which you may have to visit in person. Some churches have very poor records, so she might not be on their lists.

Some local volunteer groups have documented headstones - Macclesfield Ferrets is one such group - but there may not be a headstone.

There's also the National Burial Index - coverage varies across the country, and I'm not sure how recent the burials are - even though I've got a copy! I've personally not found many of my ancestors on it.

There's also the possibility that she was cremated and her ashes either retained by the crematorium or scattered. It being war time, cremation had started to become more acceptable to people.

Thank you for your advice , she died in Redhill hospital Edgeware , death was registered in Hendon which is now Barnet , she lived in kenton Harrow Middlesex , Harow cemetries dont have her , which i find strange so perhaps she is in a church yard , they were poor so the newspaper would be out of the question but thank you for that advice anyway ,
i will plod through churches near to her home
her name was Annie Mills but she has been registered under Nancy Mills so perhaps i would have a choice of the 2 names for burial or do you think she would have been buried under the registered name

Time is running out as her son (my uncle )is 83 and she left him when he was 4 so to find her grave and put a headstone there if needed would be great for him to see

As Joan says the newspapers are definitely worth a try. My own family had next to nothing and always lived hand to mouth, but still managed to put a small announcement in the local newspaper for any family death. I think they felt it was something that they "should" find the money for.

My uncle died in 1936 at Redhill Hospital, Edgware. He was living at Kingsbury, just a couple of miles from Harrow and he was buried in Kensall Green cemetery. Perhaps you could try contacting them to see if your relative is there?

Hi everyone
Thank you for your help and advice , i thought i would give it one more shot, so for the 3rd time i rang Harrow cemetries who said YES we have her after telling me twice they hadnt got her , she is in Wealdstone cemetry Harrow.
We are going there next sunday week as we both work , the lady at Harrow said its not a public grave , it was bought and she is the only one in there i have a grave number so am dying to see if she has a headstone if not i will put one there , am soooo excited thank you all again

yes after 40+years of looking what a result thank you all again , 2011 has been good so far had a victory in an employment tribunal for unfair dismissal as well so all is good , i do miss being a dinner lady but who knows at my next hearing i may get my job back xxxx
