I have a Lidia Atherton who`s parents were John Atherton and Mary, daughter of Peter and Alice Atherton. I have searched for a marriage of Peter and Mary in the late 1700`s in Wigan, and cannot find them. I found an almost definite baptism of Mary and siblings, one of which was Molly.

I did find a marriage of a Molly Atherton and a John Atherton which would tie in the the dates of children born to Molly/Mary and John and just wondered if anyone thought that Molly was short for Mary. I have just read on google that Mary is an Irish name and Molly is a pet name for Mary but would appreciate any suggestions before I go down the wrong track.

But would they put Molly on the marriage certificate instead of Mary, (Mary is named as mother on the baptisms of all children)

Molly can be a pet name for Mary and it is possible that she gave the name she was known by on her marriage certificate. Whoever recorded the information would just write down whatever they were told.

Sorry Lancashire Ann got a bit mixed up, tried to type it quick. Lidia is the daughter of John and Mary Atherton (Mary was described on the baptism of Lidia as the daughter of Peter and Alice Atherton)

John Atherton married a Mary Atherton but I cannot find a marriage of John and Mary in Wigan, only a Molly Atherton and John Atherton.

Lidia was born 1808 in Wigan, I have her baptism as above. She married a Jabez Newton, also born in Wigan.

Just wondered if Mary could in fact be Molly.

All that work you did Ann (Green Gables) and as I got the names mixed up none of them seem to be mine. A HUGE APOLOGY hope you can forgive me.
