It would be worth getting Richard's marriage cert of 1888 to see if George is recorded as deceased on that.

Is this him in 1851?

1851 England Census about George Mills
Name: George Mills
Age: 25
Estimated birth year: abt 1826
Relation: Soldier
Gender: M (Male)
Where born: Sunel, Suffolk, England [I can't work out the town but it certainly doesn't start with an 'S' . It is nothing like the one in Suffolk. This enumerator has funny curlicues on his capitals. His 'E' & 'J' look similar. It does look as if it ends in '...el'.]
Civil Parish: Heston
County/Island: Middlesex
Country: England
Street address: Hounslow Barracks

Occupation: Private

Condition as to marriage: unmarried

Registration district: Brentford
Sub-registration district: Isleworth
ED, institution, or vessel: Hounslow Barracks

Looks like it might be the 16th (The Queen’s) Regiment of Light Dragoons (Lancers). Lieutenant Colonel Sir John Rowland Smyth is the senior officer on the census and that was the regiment he was with in 1851.

Between the 1820s and 1846 they were in India. On their return from India the 16th were garrisoned in Ireland. This would fit in with the elder son's birth. However it is all guesswork.

Patchem, any other reason the military wouldn't allow a birth record for Clara? Or is it 19th C administration?

Richard

Richard Report 31 Dec 2010 22:38

Wow, certainly many angles to attack from. Very indepth Ozi. Sorry I dont have the facts to hand. I am on a night shift at work. All off the top of my head.

Ozi, I have the wedding certificate for Clara Arabella in 1892. It states George Nelson Mills is deceased by then. Could not find a birth record though. She would of been born near the barracks then, in York. Nothing on free bmd?

Richard

Richard Report 31 Dec 2010 22:31

Hi Ozi, as far as I am aware, the Nelson was a male thing. It doesnt appear in 1841 in Ipswich, however you can see where some of the female names come from. Sorry. Getting to know my way round. Shall dispense with name clicking

How do you know that Clara Arabella is your Clara - do you have the wedding certificate?
Do you have a birth certificate for Clara?
Thanks

Added: Clara is 7 in 1871, so born 1863/1864

I understand that you're looking for George, Richard, but every little bit of info gleaned and shared helps track the family down. Widowed mothers are often living with their sons or daughters.

For example when & where was Clara married?
