Can someone have a look at this for me - it isn't making much sense!

My g.g.grandmother, born Mary Ann Lott, married her stepbrother, George Cole on 3rd October 1842. She was a widow at the time, Mary Ann Faulkner.

I have found the first marriage on FreeBMD,
Mary Ann Lott/George Faulkner, June quarter 1841 Reading
Then I looked for his death, and the only one that looks probable is also Reading, March quarter 1841!

I have had to let my Ancestry membership lapse, unfortunately, so can't check on there. I shall probably have to send for the certificates, I know, but wanted to make sure I had the right people first!

Am I missing something?

Does seem strange....
was George known by/have a mddle name?

Have you got him on the 1841 census? it may reveal a middle name.

The 1841 census was taken on the night of 6th/7th June, so if this is your George he was obviously alive then, which should rule out the George Faulkner death in the JFM quarter...

These are the only George faulkner deaths between June qtr.1841 and Dec 1842 when Mary Ann re married.....

That ties with the GRO ref of June quarter .
You may have to get the marriage cert to double check its the same girl that married George Cole

Hi

Sorry for the delay - I lost internet connection, we've had thunderstorms!

Yes that does look like them, but FreeBMD says the marriage was June 1841. I wasn't sure if June quarter meant the quarter up to June or the quarter after it? In any case, was his death prior to this? I can understand the event being registered late, but surely not before it happens!

I have the marriage certificate for the Mary Ann Faulkner/George Cole marriage. She is shown as the daughter of Thomas Ewell Lott - age - Full

Nickydownsouth

Nickydownsouth Report 22 Jul 2010 12:16

A marriage is registered in the qtr it took place...unlike births that can be registered up to 6 weeks after the event, so the freeBMD entry matches the IGI entry Richard gave you of the marriage taking place on 24th May.......2 weeks before the 1841 census was taken,

Sorry, Nickydown south - I'm having all sorts of problems today - I suppose he could have been the Epsom death, although there don't seem to have been any other connections with that area.

By 1841, Thomas Ewell Lott had married George Cole' s mother, Dinah and they lived in Devizes. At the time of the Mary Ann/ George marriage, they were both living in Reading and continued to do so afterwards, although the marriage actually took place in Newington, London (Surrey).

Kay????

Kay???? Report 22 Jul 2010 12:23

GRO quarters only mean the quarter they were entered up in to GROindexes, the event may have taken place just before,

a marriage on the last day of March will go in the next quarter of.

A/M/June.it depended when the local register returns were sent in,

Well, he could have died anywhere really ...

What was his occupation? Maybe he travelled as part of his job. Maybe he was away looking for work and met with an accident?

Christine

Christine Report 22 Jul 2010 12:32

Thanks Kay, that clears up the quarters question for me. Mrs Grumpy, the 1841 shows him as a carpenter, so that's quite true, he could have been away from home.

I feel a bit reluctant to send for too many certs for George Faulkner, as he wasn't my ancestor - I was really trying to fill in Mary Ann's background - I have found very little about her or who her mother was, but I think I'll have to bite the bullet - this will nag at me now!

Artbeat, is Case a mistranscription? I've just looked at the 1861, but it's at the bottom of the page and there's only Frederick G below George and Mary Ann - can't look at the next page on here, so not sure if I'm looking at the right one. - is ot 13 Crown St Reading? If its showing Mary Faulkner daughter-in-law, this must surely mean step-daughter?

Artbeat

Artbeat Report 22 Jul 2010 12:54

If that is the correct family then i am becoming confused with the marriage date.

Christine Report 22 Jul 2010 12:54

I'm getting more confused by the minute! If Mary Jane Ann Faulkner was born in Oct 1843, this is a full year after her marriage to George Cole! The marriage cert for that, by the way, is on BMDshare.com.

Christine

Christine Report 22 Jul 2010 13:00

That's defintely the right people in 1851 - George Cole was born in Devizes in 1825. The age of 8 for Mary Ann Jnr ties up with a birth date of 1843, but her mother definitely married George Cole in 1842!
