Hi Ozi. This was not the first mistake that I have made though!! No doubt those who use the boards frequently have a better understanding how they work. I really appreciate all the tips received from members. As a result I managed to find Thomas' birthplace from an obscure census, his death from a will, that led me to discover Elizabeth's burial from '1066 Genealogy' The one thing that eludes me at present is the origins of Elizabeth Mary?

Anthony, don't avoid the boards because of one little mistake that many, many, MANY people make.

There are lots of people willing to help. AGG gave you the tip about not having more than one thread for the same family/individual, but was still finding you leads to follow.

Thank you for your advice and direction Ann. There are Shellitoes in the St Marylebone area but none with children with the name Elizabeth Mary. I have already linked Richard Thorne and Elizabeth Lee as probable parents for Thomas. Think I'll put this one to sleep and I had better avoid these boards.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Think I will book to visit the PRO at Lewes and root through some of the PR's. May at least find the burials of Thomas and his wife Elizabeth??

Have traced a few of them, all following the trade of their father, a couple in London, one in Hasting who appears in several census and also historical directories. But no trace of Thomas their father after 1841 and an entry in the 1839 directory

Have you succesfully traced all his children and maybe siblings if you know of any through all the census`s?

Sometimes they can be with a grandparent or other family member which may be a clue to where they originated from...

Have seen the PR regarding the marriage but it shows little, his and her name and witnesses only and of course his profession

Did he marry in Hastings? If you're lucky the parish marriage record may have where he is from.

Update: Just re-read your first post and he was married in Hastings. Have you had a look at the original record?

As far as I can tell it is for moving from and to any parish, but of course not everyone got them.

Here's a site for settlement papers information. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~englin/poorsettlement.htm

"Settlement papers contain details of every event having a bearing on settlement, from cradle to present circumstances, age, parentage, birthplace, apprenticeship, employment, marriage, names, ages of children, etc. were all written down. They were kept by the parish (normally in the Parish Chest) as evidence of settlement someplace else." (Meaning the parish they moved from.)

So if they were kept in the Parish Chest then if the papers were still around they would be stored where each individual parish has archived their records.

However you don't know which parish he came from, and unless there was any need to take up an issue with him such as being a pauper and a burden on the parish he was living in I doubt that you'll be able to find out that way.

Anthony i`d take a look at the East sussex Records office, it says 90% of their records can be obtained electronically, so maybe they will have something for you..

I know of his son William Thomas, but will certainly take a look at the others thank you. Do you know anything about settlement papers in those days?

It looks as if he's widowed in the 1841.

Have you managed to track any of his children ... it's possible that he ended up living with one of them as he grew older.

I can't see an obvious death date but there are quite a list in Sussex before 1866 so he could be any of those. And he could have died anywhere really. Plus, registration was not compulsory until 1865ish (even for deaths!).

Could be worth check parish records for burials for the area he was in in the 1841 ... if you can't find him that might mean he was alive post 1851 ...
