In the 1871 census in Preston Street, Preston, Suffolk

Joseph King ...head...58....Boot maker......Long Melford
Mary Ann..........wife....61..............................Preston
John Orlando...G/son..9.......scholar............Rattlesden
Mary Ann..........G/daught......scholar............Rattlesden

John seemed to be his prefered name as I have a couple of letters from 1930 signed by him and his wife Mary when they were in Twickenham

Well, Tim, I've just read all the images for Preston 1871 (11 pages) and there is only one King for the whole village, and he's a James. There are only 3-4 grandsons, none named John, and no grand daughters at all. So I don't know where you've got your info.

Also a William Cuthbert is the only person born in Rattlesden and nobody at all born in Melford, Long or otherwise.

There are tailors, dressmakers and glovers, but no bootmaker, shoemaker, cordwainer or cobbler. The villagers had to go elsewhere for their shoes.

Have you got a copy of the image? If so please give us the page number.

Hi Ozi
Reference number on 1871 census page is RG10/1721 number 71 page 3

Google 1871 census
click on UK Census 1841-1901
click on Free Search...blue tab on R H Side
you are now on The Genealogist web site
enter Joseph King 1813 and event group 1871 census
select Suffolk which has 3 Joseph King
select our man the Boot Maker born Long Melford
Granted John has been called Mary but that is just a "typo" in transcription

Page 3 is missing from Ancestry. Must be missing from Findmypast and this site too.

Bummer. I hadn't noticed a page was missing. I was so intent on the info.

Well anyway it definitely says Rattlesden. Still having no luck finding him in 1901.
