i'm new to genes and would welcome info on how i might find any children of named parents and likewise parents of children or their siblings,
Regards Bob

Bob, you have to start with what you know and work backwards, this may mean buying birth or marriage certs. Then you can begin to search Cenus returns back from 1911 or you could search Trees on here.
FreeBMD have the indexes for BMD's from 1837 up to about 1935 (it is free)
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

After 1912 the mmn was added to the birth index so that makes searching a bit easier.

Or you can ask on here if stuck.
You will be on a steep but fascinating learning curve

Good luck Jennifer

Robert,

It depends what years you are searching, after 1912 mothers maiden names were included in the indexes, so Free BMD is a good starting point especially if you have a location also.

If you post some details regarding locations etc, there are lots of people on here that have knowledge of locating records for all over the UK and abroad.

RutlandBelle Report 15 Apr 2010 18:55

Bob it depends on how old your grandparents are. Mine for instance were born back in the 1880's so I can look on census returns on Ancestry or FMP but both of these are subscription or buy credits.

**Ann**

**Ann** Report 15 Apr 2010 18:57

Robert,

What are your grandparents names birth years and places of birth (if known) perhaps we can start you on your trail, there are a few of us with 1911 access.

Whatever you do, don't buy Genes Gold membership! To look for census reports (plus a lot more) you need ancestry or FMP. Both have 14-day free trials so worth a look.

If you have already got some info together, go to freebmd site and see if you can locate a few births, marriages and deaths whIch you already know about;

www.freebmd.org.uk

This is good practice, and will stand you in good stead as you take the family research back.

my grandfather and his siblings were born between 1876 and 1892 it is their children that i am trying to find as i can't seem to find all the names that i have on BMD
What is FMP ?

**Ann**

**Ann** Report 15 Apr 2010 19:08

Robert,

It may be best to try and locate them on the census firstly, if you give your grandfathers year of birth and name as I said we may be able to get you going on your search.

FMP Is Find My Past.... a site that hold BMD<s and census info as well as other records.

brummiejan Report 15 Apr 2010 19:15

Robert, you say "all the names that I have" - wondering where these are from? Don't rely on family info if that's your source.

You have to work steadily backwards as suggested; start with 1911 - people will help - then you can go back to 1901 etc. But to do this yourself you need a sub as described above, or to ask others to help out.

Can't emphasise enough how important it is to work backwards and to verify everything as you go.
