I'm sorry I am a complete beginner at this type of information what does it mean? I am looking for Lucy /Louisa Bennett born approx 1867 daughter of John Bennett.
Are these siblings of Lucy?
You are going to have to give it to me in plain English I'm afraid.
Thank you for your help and interest.

The Lucy Bennett born 1867 to John & Martha Bennett Simpsons Square was the person I thought was my G.Grandmother but I have recently found out she IS NOT MY LUCY. and the Louisa Bennett born Bridgnorth IS NOT MY LUCY the Lucy Bennett born Cressage 1868 & Louisa Bennett 1868 Shrewsbury may be her, but I can find no record of her birth registration/christening, I do know by her marriage certificate her fathers name was John but that is all - any help would be most appreciated.

Lucy did not have a lot to do with her daughter (according to my mother) because her daughter had lots of children she actually died giving birth to her 13th live baby in 1936 Lucy did not die until 1940
I can only find the 2 births recorded to Lucy Bennett/Shotton so perhaps she did have miscarriages, but as I cannot find her before her marriage I will never know.

Sandra

she may have had other children that survived, or she may have had lots of miscarriages and stillbirths, or maybe just not had other children.

My own grandmother had 4 children:- 1903 (my mother), 1909, 1915, and 1923

No other children apparently born and died after birth, no family tales of stillbirths/miscarriages.

Sylvia thank you for this information, unfortunately I do not have any idea where she was born, I assume it was in Shropshire as the family never moved far after she was married, on her marriage certificate she states her fathers name as John Bennett labourer. I find it strange that she had her daughter in 1894 (My Gran) and her only other child a boy in 1901 surely there must have been others who did not survive, but where do I start to look for them?

Sandra

Her birth may of course never have been registered

sorry to tell you that!!

Registration of bmds came in on July 1 1837.

Vicars were responsible for sending information on marriages and deaths to the local registrar's office, which then sent them down to London.

However, the onus for registering births was put onto the Registrar ..... who was supposed to find out about all births in his district, then go to the house and register the birth.

Needless to say, many hundreds (perhaps thousands) of babies slipped through the net.

The law was changed in mid-1875 so that the onus was now put onto the mother to go to the Registrar or Registry Office and register her baby's birth within 6 weeks ........ or be fined.

A number of babies still were not registered for various reasons, and some mothers changed the date of birth because they had gone past the 6 week date and didn't want to pay a fine.

Have you thought that she may have been baptised much later than just after her birth??

Some parents had their children baptized in batches ......... it was apparently cheaper!

Other children were not baptized until it was time to begin work (which could be any time after the age of about 8), or even not until shortly before they got married.

Unfortunately no, when I first did this family history over 20 years ago I thought this was her, I did not start again until recently and to my horror I found out that the person I had thought was my g.grandmother was not, this Lucy Bennett & family moved to Birmingham and she died there in the early 1900's.
I have tried everywhere to locate the birth place/family of 'my' Lucy but to no avail, she is in the 1901 & 1911 census married to William Shotton and I have her death certificate; but that is all.
