Hi

wonder if any body can come up with any more thoughts on this family that I have on my tree.

Arthur James Blackwell b1857 Leamington, Warwick. He married Mary Ann Thompson 1876, they have several children. On 1891 census Mary Ann is in the Warwick Union workhouse with a baby and Arthur is with his sister, however in 1901 he is with Annie Elizabeth Blackwell, who is said to be a boarder, and there are a few more children. I cant find a marriage and the Arthur dies 1910 and on 1911 Annie Elizabeth is with the children and she has the surname Bailey as do the children, after 1911 I cant find marriages or any sign of them.

Any thoughts please, its driving me mad. Thanks

Thanks everyone, information you have posted so far is all correct and is what I have on my tree.

Have wondered if she was part of the family so sent for Nancy Blackwell's birth cert.

1897 parent Annie Elizabeth Blackwell formerly Bailey, Father Arthur, home painter, address is 32 Eagle Street like the 1901 census.

Am going around in circles right now! Thanks for your help though

I am guessing that Bailey is her maiden.
1881
Annie E. Bailey Thomas,
Jane abt 1874 Wilmcote, Warwickshire, England Daughter Aston Cantlow, Warwickshire
1891
Annie Elizabeth Bailey abt 1873 Withcote, Warwickshire, England Servant Leamington, Warwickshire
1901
I see that she is single,so could be a mistranscription
What is her status in 1911 Widow /married or single?
Have you got a birth cert.for one of the children To find out their mother?

Yes have the birth cert for Nancy which confirms Arthur and Annie E Blackwell formerly Bailey are the parents.

Arthur dies in the canal in Leamington in 1910, so am trying to search the family after 1911, but no sign!

Arthur married Mary Ann, and had children

Mary Ann ended up in the workhouse for some reason ........... it may well have been in the hospital part, or the asylum

Arthur moved in with Annie Elizabeth, but they could not marry because Mary Ann was still alive

In other words ............. what we now call a common-law marriage

After Arthur's death, Annie Elizabeth went back to her maiden name

Find Mary Ann Blackwell! And any of the children she had with Arthur

If she is still alive in 1911, then you have your answer.

That Mary Ann Blackwell in the Workhouse is said to be Unmarried.

The baby is Ann Elizabeth Blackwell, not Ann Eliza (the second name is written Elizh, with the h as a superscript).

I cannot read the occupation that is put for her and the baby ......... No (something)

and here is that Mary Ann Blackwell from 1891

The image says Married, No Occupation

I'm wondering whether the Mary Ann Blackwell in the Workhouse is the wife of Arthur

If she was, then she is still alive in 1901

Thank you so much for all the searching you have done and I will also look into Rosetta too. I have also found a possible death for Mary Ann Blackwell.

I understand what your saying about Annie Elizabeth, not marrying Arthur and going back to her maiden name after Arthur killed himself in 1910, however I am keen to find out what happened to her and the 3 children.

Thank you again

Janey

Thelma

Thelma Report 4 Feb 2010 11:32

marriage?
Annie E Bailey 1911 Lutterworth Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Warwickshire
You will have to search for a variety of surname. Blackwell,Bailey and if Annie married then her new name.

I have been invited to join in by my namesake. ;)

Trying to figure out where Annie was born - seems to be Alcester reg dist.

So this would be her birth:

Births Mar 1874
Bailey Annie Elizabeth Alcester 6d 642

But I'm being dumb -- I was thinking that getting her birth cert and thus her exact dob might help find her death even if under a different surname - but that only works after 1971ish when dob was recorded with the death.

That might work for the children, though. You have Nancy's birth cert - what is her exact dob?

Births Jun 1901
BLACKWELL Arthur Warwick 6d 678

Births Sep 1899
Blackwell Fanny Blackwell Warwick 6d 680

edit - aha -

Births Jun 1901
BAILEY Arthur Blackwell Warwick 6d 678

Births Sep 1899
Bailey Fanny Blackwell Warwick 6d 680

for ref.
