Sandra.
If a couple are not married the birth of the children could be registered under both surnames. The father had to be present at the reg office when the births were registered.
My mum, I found out was born in 1919 before my grandparents married in 1920. Her birth is registered under both surnames but with the same reg number

I am always amazed at the large families. It must have been hard work!
I wanted six but gave up after two. A very weird place to put a birth certificate. I couldn't find my mum's marriage cert after she died maybe it was in one of the pictures I took to Oxfam.........

That's interesting - I seem to learn something new on a daily basis! I have checked for my mums birth under my granny's maiden name Goodman but she is only recorded under Baker -her father's surname in this case. Perhaps they were married after all.
