Hi everyone. I am looking for some advice on finding Sonny Hammond. I can't seem to find him on any records, I was wondering if Sonny could possibly be a nickname or abbreviation for something, any ideas what?
Thanks, Carol.

Could be a nickname for someone who was the only son in a family full of daughters? Have you got anything else to go on, like a possible mother's maiden name to go on that you could match his birth registration up with? (Assuming he was born after 1911.)

Hi Kate i have found 14 children up to now both male and female dating from 1908 to the last born in 1928 and the mothers maiden name was Blackwell thats why i think it a nickname

Good start - have you got any ideas as to when Sonny was born, roughly?

Looking at FreeBMD, am I right in guessing that they are the Blackwell children born in Chorlton

It just occurred, could he have had the same name as his father, hence he was named "Sonny" to distinguish him from the elder man with his name?

I don't suppose you've got a christian name for his mum? I looked on the Lancashire BMD site for a Hammond/Blackwell marriage but the only one I could see was a male Blackwell marrying a female Hammond, which is the wrong way round.

I've found a Maud (Sep 1914, Chorlton), Hilda M (Dec 1915, Chorlton), James F (Sep 1920, Chorlton), George A (Sep 1922, Chorlton), Rose (Dec 1923, Chorlton), Joan E (Mar 1925, Manchester S) and Dorothy (Dec 1928, Manchester S).

Edit - so the missing one must be Wilfred (Dec 1918, Prestwich)? I can't see one in 1917, though . . .

Sonny can be a nickname for Jim/James and there was one:

England & Wales, Birth Index: 1916-2005
about James F Hammond
Name: James F Hammond
Mother's Maiden Surname: Blackwell
Date of Registration: Jul Aug Sep 1920
Registration district: Chorlton
Registration county: Lancashire
Volume Number: 8c
Page Number: 1689

That's weird - nothing's come up at all between 1925 and 1928 . . .

Mind you, nothing on FreeBMD is coming up for the first quarter of 1927 - wonder if there's one in the missing quarter?

Carol

Carol Report 17 Jun 2009 23:57

Evelyn was born in feb 1927

Carol Report 17 Jun 2009 23:59

Oh where oh where is Sonny?

Kate

Kate Report 17 Jun 2009 23:59

That would make sense - she must be temporarily "missing". I did a search for all Hammonds between 1926 and 1927 and it jumps straight from Dec qtr 1926 to Jun qtr 1927.
